  • A rebellious child who was also uprooted as a result of his father's work, he was kicked out of 15 different grade schools and attended six different high schools.
  • At the urging of his father, considered going into the priesthood for a while.
  • Dropped out of high school to enlist in the Navy with longtime friend and fellow actor Pat O'Brien.
  • While studying medicine at Wisconsin's Ripon College, decided to become a professional actor after starring in several plays.
  • First major big-screen role came in 1930 with John Ford's crime comedy Up the River, costarring Humphrey Bogart.
  • First actor to win back-to-back Oscars.
  • Appeared in nine films with companion and frequent costar Katharine Hepburn. They first costarred in the 1942 romantic comedy Woman of the Year; they last appeared together in 1967's Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, which was completed just 17 days before Tracy's death.
  • After reportedly causing problems on the set, he was fired from Robert Wise's 1956 film Tribute to a Bad Man; it was his final movie with MGM after two decades at the studio.
