Cheers to Jericho for sending a shout-out to the fans who saved the show. CBS' postapocalyptic drama rose from the ashes of cancellation after devotees inundated the network with thousands of pounds of peanuts (a reference to a line spoken by Skeet Ulrich in last season's finale). So in this year's opener, when Ulrich's character visited a wounded comrade in the hospital, there was a close-up of, yes, peanuts on the patient's bedside table. You know the story. Last year, CBS said, "You're canceled!" Jericho "Rangers," taking a cue from the show's hero, Jake Green (played by Skeet Ulrich) and also Anthony C. McAuliffe, a U.S. General during World War II, responded firmly with, "Nuts!" Now Jericho is back for a seven-episode run starting tonight at 10 pm/ET on CBS.
"There's been a little angel on Jericho's shoulder," Carol Barbee, executive producer, tells TVGuide.com. "We didn't think the seven episodes CBS gave us were very much, but if we'd been given eight, we'd have a finale sitting in pieces unedited [because of the strike]. Instead, we have seven shows ready to go."

The fate of CBS' Jericho after its second season, tentatively scheduled to launch in January, may still be up in the air. But Carol Barbee has a contingency plan. The executive producer shot an alternate ending in case the Eye decides to cancel the show for a second time.
"The ending that we planned was always meant to be a payoff for the seven-episode arc," Barbee told TV Guide at Wednesday night's Jericho Season 1 DVD release party. "It won't close off the whole story but it will show you where we would go in a third season." If the show isn't renewed, "It gives you a huge mythology so that you understand so much about what has happened," she says.

Now that Jericho has officially been picked up for mid-season/seven episodes, the question is who exactly will be returning with it. According to the Hollywood Reporter, "The majority of the cast" — including Skeet Ulrich, Lennie James and Ashley Scott — is expected back, as are exec producers Stephen Chbosky and Jon Turteltaub, while Carol Barbee will juggle show-running duties at Jericho and Swingtown, a new CBS drama debuting mid-season. And though some writers are already committed to new projects, a full staff isn't needed for the abbreviated run.While CBS boss Nina Tassler's full letter to fans is posted at the Ausiello Report, series star Ulrich has this to share with the loyal and ardent viewers who went "nuts" campaigning for Jericho's return: "I'm so thankful for not only their passionate support but their tireless efforts....
