CBS reportedly will announce on Wednesday the pick-up of six new series for the 2008-09 TV season, including no less than four new dramas. Among that bunch are The Ex List (nee The Mythological Ex, a title you knew wasn't going to play in Peoria) starring Grey's Anatomy's Elizabeth Reaser; The Mentalist, starring Simon Baker; Jerry Bruckheimer's Eleventh Hour (in which a science professor advises a government agency; and Harper's Island (a murder mystery set at an island wedding).CBS two new comedies are Worst Week of My Life, chronicling the days before a young couple's wedding (because Big Day blew the roof off the place) and an untitled laffer starring Jay Mohr as a recent divorce. Simon Baker, who in his first time around the dance floor with CBS portrayed The Guardian (and more recently costarred in the short-lived Smith), has signed on to front The Mentalist. As previously reported here, the drama pilot concerns a man who uses his heightened power of observation to help solve crimes.According to Variety, Baker will be joined in the cast by Owain Yeoman (The Nine), Amanda Righetti (The O.C.), Shaun Toub and Tim Kang.

Though there was some buzz for the show and its very expensive (I heard $6 million at least) pilot, plus its starry cast (someone sign Simon Baker up for another show now!), Smith always struck me as an empty version of a Sopranos or a Shield, to name two distinguished shows with criminals as protagonists.
