Shonda Rhimes Says Heigl Not Leaving Grey’s

Katherine Heigl by Bob D'Amico/ABC

Grey's Anatomy creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes wants to set the record straight: There has been no talk of Katherine Heigl leaving the medical drama.Rumors about the starlet wanting to exit the show began this summer, after Heigl, who plays Dr. Izzie Stevens, said she wasn't submitting her name for Emmy consideration this year because the writers didn't deliver Emmy-worthy material. When asked about the rumors, Rhimes told The Associated Press, "We have every intention of seeing Katherine for the entire season." But has the actress expressed any interest in leaving the hit show? Rhimes responded firmly, "No, she has not."Rhimes cites what she calls "the Dawson's Creek phenomenon," in which a "bunch of lovely and young actors" must learn to cope with the sudden fame a TV hit brings," as a possible reason for the all the off-screen drama (including Isaiah Washington's alleged gay slur toward costar T.R. Knight and his subsequent firing). "These are people who went from li... read more

Shonda Rhimes: Surprised But Not Insulted by Heigl

Shonda Rhimes by Craig Sjodin/ABC and Katherine Heigl by Bob D'Amico/ABC

At Thursday's ABC show-runners panel, Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes took center stage as she was asked how she reacted to Katherine Heigl's recent statements in the press."It was surprising," she began tentatively. "We have a great working relationship, and Izzie is one of my favorite characters." She continued: "Katherine is an outspoken person, as you all know." When pressed for details, Rhimes offered: "I don't think she was insulting the writers. The first half of the season, her storyline was very comic. And during the second half, Katie asked me to write her light so that she could go do her movie," she said. As such, Rhimes appeared to hold no grudges, claiming that it's hard to understand the entire story. "These people are my family. We work together six days a week, 16 hours a day. I've watched as they've changed from lovely young actors to incredibly famous people."Looking forward, Rhimes refrained from expanding on ABC Entertainment president Steve McPherson's ass... read more

TCA: ABC Getting a Fall Reboot

Kate Walsh by Michael Desmond/ABC

If you get deja view looking at ABC’s not-so-new fall lineup, there’s a reason for that. Much of the schedule is a redo from last fall, with a number of promising shows returning that were cut short by the writers’ strike—most notably the Wednesday lineup of Pushing Daisies, Private Practice and Dirty Sexy Money.“Our Wednesday night was to us an unbelievable success and we’re very excited to get back to that,” ABC entertainment president Steve McPherson said during a session with critics at the TCA press tour Wednesday morning. “We have kind of the advantage going in that we felt we had a dominant fall and a real strong core schedule and we didn’t need that much new programming.”In recent seasons, ABC has tended to single out just a few new shows for massive fall promotion, and this season it's planning to embrace a few old favorites. “We can actually prioritize returning shows,” says McPherson. One in particular: Desperate... read more

Grey's' Boss Dissects the Finale Shockers and Secrets

Grey's Anatomy by Randy Holmes/ABC

Viewers weren't the only ones surprised by the Grey's Anatomy finale shocker on Thursday. No, Shonda Rhimes wrote Friday in her blog that she kept the Mer-in-a-pool-of-blood secret from the show's other writers, up until the very last moment she could. The reason behind Rhimes' long wait is that, she explained, she starts with the last scene of her finales before stepping back to plan out what comes before it. Yes, that means that she's pitching the end of Season 5 Friday (!), and that Thursday's big finale underpinnings were actually hatched four years ago. For Rhimes, though, the big moment was not in the kiss, but in the moments after. "For this season," she explains, "I knew immediately that I wanted more hope. I knew I personally NEEDED more hope. So I pitched Meredith standing on Derek’s land in a field of candles telling Derek where the living room could be, where the kitchen could be, where the kids could play. Because I wanted them together."The trick for Rhimes, thoug... read more

What's Next For Grey's?

Shonda Rhimes, creator of Grey's Anatomy

The Grey’s Anatomy (Thursdays at 9 pm/ET, ABC) creator gives us the scoop on the show's return in this special guest column. I like to call these five upcoming episodes Grey's Anatomy,  Season 4, Part 2. Because for us, for the stories, it really does feel like a whole separate season. I came back to work after the strike with a whole new purpose, a new dedication. And a sense of hope. My best friend, Oprah…OK, in my head she’s my best friend, but in reality she barely knows me. But, secretly, I like to pretend I’m  Gayle King because Gayle is the person who makes Oprah laugh, and who doesn’t want to be the one to do that? Also, I secretly wanna be Angelina Jolie. Because of the babies and the Brad and the fabulousness, but I don’t have the legs…. I lost my point. My point is that Oprah would s read more

Just wanted to comment on Amy ...

Question: Just wanted to comment on Amy J.'s question regarding Shonda Rhimes' messing with fans' heads. The quote "Meredith and Derek should either be over by the end of the season, or she should make it on her own" was a typo, and the correct quote from Shonda was in fact that "Meredith and Derek should either be together by the end of the season or she should make it on her own." I don't think she's playing games here. I do know that nobody believes her because she has lied to fans over and over in the past in a desperate attempt to garner ratings. And considering Nurse Plot Device is sticking around for all five episodes, no one believes this reunion will be done realistically, especially if we're going to be subjected to Derek actually being torn between the admitted love of his life and some nurse he never noticed in over 30 surgeries. What I want to see more than anything is Derek admitting that the failure of his and Meredith's relationship isn't all her fault, but since he ... read more

Grey's Scoop! Mer and Der, Together Forever?

Grey's Anatomy by Bob D'Amico/ABC

TV Guide spoke exclusively to Shonda Rhimes about the springtime return of Grey's Anatomy. Full details will be revealed in the March 31 double issue of TV Guide, but this little nugget is too hot to sit on. In fact, it could get certain 'shippers' temperatures rising. "I am pretty dedicated to the idea that Meredith and Derek are to be together for good by the end of this season," Rhimes told us. "What's going to be interesting is to see how she gets her act together, and how they decide that this is it."So does that mean a wedding finale? "I'm not saying that," Rhimes replied. OK, but will Meredith get a ring? "I'm not saying that, either," she said with a laugh. "Then again, I'm not saying that she won't."Hmmm, there's not going to be another Seattle Grace prom, is there? "Let's put it this way," Rhimes cracked, "I don't think anyone is going to be in eveningwear at the end of the season." — David Keeps What's your take? Whose act truly needs "getting together" here? read more

It's Good to Be Scared

Episode Recap Crash Into Me Part Two December 6 2007What a night Mer finally tells Derek that she doesnt want him to date other people and he goes and locks lips with Rose at the hospital Shonda couldnt have planned that cliffhanger any better herself because tonights episode marks the last new episode available this month All I can say is I really hope that Derek doesnt choose Rose over Meredith Its true Mer was slow to open up to him but how can he walk away from her now Especially after she told him I dont want to lose youMy heart really goes out to Bailey too Tonight she put her troubled marriage on the line to operate on Shane Gale Harold a white supremacist Though it didnt really surprise me that Shane was more concerned about his ruined tattoo than he was about how Bailey had saved his life For me it was almost harder to watch Tucker Cress Williams disregard the importance of Baileys job and then suggest to George that their marr read more
