November 28, 2006: Knit One, Purl Two

Quick: What’s the first thing you think of when you see someone knitting? What about an entire town full of people knitting, huge balls of yarn in Stars Hollow Square, and Sookie cooking up balls of spaghetti speared with bread sticks? Okay, we get it. This one is about children. A little too heavy-handed this time around. (Meanwhile, what town actually holds a knit-a-thon to save a beetle-infested bridge? Why did Gilmore Girls cast ...

Question: Why did Gilmore Girls cast the same actress for two different roles twice? First, it was Marion Ross as Great Grandma Gilmore and cousin Marilyn, and now it's Sherilyn Fenn as Anna Nardini and Sasha, the girlfriend of Jess' dad. Why not cast someone new?

Answer: Because it's Amy Sherman-Palladino's show and she'll do as she damn well pleases. "I love [Sherilyn] so much and I don't care," says AS-P. I've just been looking constantly for a time to work with Sherilyn, and I'm getting very old and I could just get hit by a truck at any minute. I just simply can't put it off that long, so I'd just rather get her in and have her part of my world."

I just watched an all-new ...

Question: I just watched an all-new episode of Gilmore Girls last night, and even though I'm very grateful that they're back with new episodes to round out the rest of the sixth season, I still can't get over the fact that they hired Sherilyn Fenn again to play a different role in the show as Luke's ex-girlfriend and April's mother. She's already been on the show before playing the girlfriend of Jess' dad a few seasons ago! Why did they have to make a lazy casting decision like that and not hire any other aspiring actresses to play that particular role? This kind of thing has happened before on other TV shows and this type of terrible casting decision is getting pretty old by now! Answer: Having made a conscious choice not to watch the episode Sherilyn Fenn appeared in earlier — since I had no interest whatsoever in a Jess spin-off, which is what that episode was trying to set up — I wasn't that thrown by this repeat casting. And I thought she was terrific, both physically an ... read more
