The London blitz took World War II out of the battlefields and into the home. The nightly bombing raids by the Luftwaffe tore at the fabric of daily life, yet stirred, united and even exhilarated the British, shaking up their class-ridden society. Among them was 7-year-old Bill (Sebastian Rice Edwards), and for him the war was a glorious adventure, the bombed ruins a perfect playground. Drawn from writer/producer/director John Boorman's childhood memories, Hope and Glory re-creates the story of an ordinary family living in extraordinary times, seen through the eyes of a young boy. Also starring Sarah Miles and David Hayman as Bill's parents and Derrick O'Connor as a close family friend, the film was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director.
