The CW Sinks Its Teeth Into Moonlight

Alex O'Loughlin fans got a bloody good summer treat when the CW acquired all 16 episodes of Moonlight, the Aussie actor's short-lived but beloved vampire detective show. "We get letters and e-mails about Moonlight all the time," says CW entertainment chief Dawn Ostroff. "And so we thought it would be interesting if we aired it following The Vampire Diaries."

Moonlight (Thursdays at 9/8c, The CW) follows the perpetually 30-year-old private investigator Mick St. John (O'Loughlin), his hedonistic buddy Josef (Jason Dohring) and Beth Turner (Sophia Myles), a young reporter whose chemistry with Mick threatens her relationship with her human fiancé. TVGuide.com's In Focus: The Joys of Being Ian Somerhalder

On the CW's breakout hit The Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder plays a nearly 170-year-old man who — perhaps unwittingly — became a vampire as a teen. Though the actor's luck has been indisputably better than that of his character, Damon Salvatore, both have had the same response to the twists in their lives: outright glee.

For Damon, that giddiness manifests itself in the smirky, wanton torment of the people who surround him. In Somerhalder, fortunately, it takes a more gracious form.

"Right now, where I am, doing what I'm doing, it's exactly where I want to be," he says.

I am going to preface my ...

Question: I am going to preface my question by trying to establish a little street cred. My favorite shows include Veronica Mars, Friday Night Lights, Battlestar Galactica, The Sopranos and The Wire. While I have enjoyed new shows like Dirty Sexy Money and Chuck, there has been one show, to my big surprise, that has become my favorite: Moonlight. I know, the pilot was horrible. I originally checked it out to see alums from Veronica Mars and Alias, but I have stayed because of Alex O'Loughlin. I think he has created a really interesting, layered character, and the show's mythology and character development are really starting to take off. It's a fun guilty pleasure. It's not award-winning TV, but it's a lot of fun with a very charismatic lead. I think critics should give it a second chance. It's the first time I have watched anything on CBS in, like, 10 years. Any news on the prospects of this show given the strike? Answer: First off, you don't have to justify your enjoyment of any TV show ... read more

I had a chance to watch the ...

Question: I had a chance to watch the pilots for both Moonlight and Reaper. I'm a big Supernatural fan, and these ghost/vampire genre shows, when done well, are a lot of fun. To me, one of these shows demonstrates how you do it well, and one demonstrates how you do it badly. Let's start with the good: I really enjoy Reaper. The stars are likable, the writing is fun, and it genuinely made me laugh. It obviously isn't taking itself too seriously, but the effects are still nice and flashy, and let's face it: You couldn't ask for a more charming Satan than Ray Wise. I hope he gets more screen time. The creators obviously have a clear vision that the look, the music and the story all contribute to. I'll definitely keep tuning in. Now on to Moonlight — yikes! First of all, that voice-over. We get it, you're an angsty vampire. Shut up, already! I think the excessive VO makes the bad writing even worse. Because the writing is bad. So full of clichés! I wanted to laugh at the overly serious ... read more
