ER Invites Old Favorites to Scrub Back In | TV Guide News Report | 8/21/2007
There's no series finale written and producers and cast aren't yet ready to sign off for good but if, as many predict, ER's County General closes its doors at the end of its upcoming 14th season, the NBC drama wants to lure back as many of its cast as it can. Noah Wyle (Dr. John Carter), who's popped in and out of the show for a number of years, is returning for multiple episodes, and there will be no running around in Africa this time. "He'll be in Chicago in the ER, interacting with all our people," executive producer David Zabel tells TVGuide.com. The doc is back to check out the Joshua Carter Center, a gift from his big-bucks family, as well as for a medical concern. In turn, ER is hoping to bring back Thandie Newton, who plays Carter's wife Kem. Zabel says they've also talked to Gloria Reuben (as Jeannie Boulet) and Julianna Margulies (Carol Hathaway) about returns. I say what I am about to say as a huge fan of television and, in particular, ER. I am ready for a break. I am actually relieved that this television season is coming to an end, because I really don't think I can take any more. I am officially emotionally spent. Tonight alone, I endured the highs of Jim asking Pam out for a real date on The Office and the lows of Burke breaking Christina's impenetrable heart on Grey’s Anatomy. By the time 10 pm rolled around, I was primed and ready. Or so I thought. The shock of seeing Ray roll back in that wheelchair was naturally mitigated by the relentless promos that had shown him… rolling back in a wheelchair. But, what I was not prepared for was a bitter, angry double amputee. In a million years it never occurred to me that he had sustained that sort of life-altering injury. Happy New Year, ER! After a wonderful, though repeat-filled, holiday season, it is nice to settle into 2007 with some fresh story lines, isn’t it? And how great to have an episode that shined the spotlight squarely on our dear Dr. Kerry Weaver. But more on that later. Okay, I’ve been on the fence all season about John Stamos’ Tony Gates, and tonight I’ve finally decided: I really don’t like him. In numerous articles and commentaries I’ve read about this season, people have compared this character to George Clooney’s flawed but immensely appealing Doug Ross.
