Shane Sparks

Although Shane Sparks told that he'd be fighting the "bogus allegations" of child molestation stemming from his arrest in 2009, he has pleaded no contest to a single felony count of having unlawful sex with a minor under 16.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the former America's Best Dance Crew judge and Emmy-nominated So You Think You Can Dance choreographer entered into a plea deal Tuesday at Los Angeles County Superior Court in which eight felonies in connection with alleged sex acts would be dismissed in return for his pleading no contest to the single felony.

So You Think You Can Dance - Sabra and Danny by Kelsey McNeal/Fox

As Cat Deeley herself might say, "Well done, you." And by "you," I mean America, in making exactly the right call in the final So You Think You Can Dance voting and putting Danny and Sabra in the final two. My own speed-dialing Wednesday night went to Danny, a truly awesome dancer, but I’m at peace with Sabra winning the ultimate prize. The show was overdue a female winner, and Sabra's raw, exuberant talent (not to mention her total lack of attitude) was a marvel to behold throughout the competition. As for Thursday's final show, props to giving Lauren and Pasha (the two evicted in Monday's pretaped show) a chance to get their well-deserved public ovation. For the most part, I had a ball watching the two-hour finale, which felt like a greatest-hits replay of the best dances of the season and a tempting promo for the national Dance tour (which I'm giving serious thought to attending, and I wouldn't get within miles of an American Idol concert).Very cool, by the way, to give the s... read more

Episode 23 Recap: And the Winner Is...

Tonight was the season finale of SYTYCD and we found out the winner. The top 20 dancers were back to perform group numbers and some of their best individual routines. There were few surprises in store for us during this two-hour episode. The show opened with Tyce’s take on a routine from The Lion King. It was great to see the top 20 all back together; it was also great to finally see a Broadway number done right. Broadway numbers really cannot be done without 10 or more people. We were also treated to group dance routines by the top eight and 10.We were then treated to the routines that the choreographers wanted to see again. These routines, in order of performance, were:Mary: Pasha and Lauren — Shane’s TransformerNigel: Hok and Jamie — Wade’s Hummingbird and FlowerJean-Marc: Dom and SabraAdam: Sara and Neil — discoWade: Lacey and Danny — Dmitry’s sambaShane: Sara and Pasha — Benji’s West Coast swingTyce: Danny and Anya — fox-trot... read more

Episode 22 Recap: The Final Four

Tonight was the final night of dancing. I guess you can say they were dancing for their lives tonight, as our votes determine the winner. Our judges tonight were Dan Karaty, Mary and Nigel. Each dancer had three partner dances, a solo dance and a group dance.First up was a Tyce Diorio Broadway number that involved the top four dancers. They did a routine to Liza Minnelli’s rendition of "Mein Herr" from Cabaret. I found the number interesting and it did hold my attention. I noticed that Neil needed to use his hands to push off when he was doing the flips, while Danny just flipped his whole body around without his hands.Next up, Neil and Sabra did a Shane Sparks hip-hop routine. I found the routine fun to watch, but I agree with the judges that it was not the best hip-hop we have seen this year. Dancy, better known as Danny and Lacey did a Viennese waltz choreographed by Jean-Marc Genereux. I never thought of Avril’s "Keep Holding On" as waltz material, but it actually worke... read more

Dance Fever: Who's Going to Win?

Danny performs a routine on So You Think You Can Dance by Kelsey McNeal/Fox

Don't ask me. I would have been OK if any of this week's six finalists had won Fox's So You Think You Can Dance, including the two who were ejected Monday night in what felt like a very unsatisfying vacuum of dead air (more on that later). They're all terrific, and it was as painful as I expected to see any of them go.Without question, Dance has been my favorite reality-competition show of the summer. If you’ve been watching that hokey excuse for a variety show over on NBC and wondering if America really does have talent, Dance answers that question in the affirmative, and then some. These young dancers are each so versatile and expressively engaging it’s a revelation each week to see them in action. And along the way, the show has made minor celebrities of recurring choreographers like Wade Robson (tell me you didn’t know those were his insane "Thriller"-style moves at the start of Monday’s show), hip-hop master Shane Sparks, and especially the queen of contempo... read more
