Carson Daly, Natasha Leggero

Weekend Review: Downton Abbey, Dateline on Asthma, Best of Fallon, All-Star Simpsons

Downton Abbey

Was it really so hard finding good help in those days? When Robert, aka Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville), is informed that his wife is once again bereft of a lady's maid, he overdramatically moans, "Are we living under a curse?"

There's no question a pall thicker than London fog hangs heavy over Downton Abbey in its fourth year as Masterpiece Classic's signature series (Sunday, 9/8c, on PBS; check tvguide.com listings). Not only has Lady Cora's bedchamber not been the same since her scheming servant O'Brien left — she slinks away in the opening scene, and boy, is she missed — but the family and staff are in sustained mourning over the untimely (and contrived) death, six months earlier, of heir Matthew Crawley, Lady Mary's husband, in last year's unhappy finale.

Miley Cyrus Spoofs Government Shutdown, VMA Performance on Saturday Night Live

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus did plenty of singing on Saturday Night Live this week, but thankfully left the twerking at home for the most part. Acting as both host and musical guest, Cyrus skewered the government shutdown in one sketch and parodied her infamous performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in another. She also performed her single "Wrecking Ball" (with clothes on) and an acoustic version of "We Can't Stop." Check out highlights from SNL below. How do you think Cyrus did as host?

The Mindy Project Is Finally Legitimately Awesome

The Mindy Project

Even the most die-hard Mindy Kaling fans had to acknowledge that The Mindy Project's first season had some flaws. And unfortunately, right when the show seemed to be finding its groove, the season was over. Now, The Mindy Project  is back for Season 2 and poised to be the great comedy we always wanted it to be.

The first season of the The Mindy Project suffered from a severe lack of focus. Torn between being a workplace comedy and a meta rom-com, The Mindy Project was a little all over the place. Certain episodes featured so many disjointed story lines that it felt stitched together like a comedy Frankenstein. But even amid the confusion, the show always had enough great jokes — delivered by some of Hollywood's hottest actors — to keep me watching.

Top Moments: Richard Simmons Goes Crazy and Oprah's Big Hang-Up

Richard Simmons and Jimmy Kimmel

Our top moments of the week:

11. Best Arrival: Viewers say goodbye to 24/7 soccer coverage and hello to FX's new sister channel, FXX, in appropriate fashion. When FXX officially kicks off at 7 a.m. Monday morning, the reception begins to go out and the game footage interchanges with an image of a black leather couch. Suddenly, the black leather couch begins to move and out from the seams bursts a very hot and a very naked Danny DeVito in a classic It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia clip. Goal!

10. Most Surprising Twist: Mistresses' Karen thinks her nightmare is over after the wrongful-death lawsuit against her is dismissed, but then her medical license gets suspended for six months. Who ratted her out for sleeping with Thomas (not to mention helping him die)? Not Elizabeth, but her... read more

The Wednesday Playlist: MTM's Cleveland Reunion, Futurama Finale, Comedies on FXX

Hot in Cleveland

At the risk of mixing one's classic-comedy metaphors ... While watching the ladies of The Mary Tyler Moore Show reunite for a chipper if undeniably poignant exercise in meta nostalgia on TV Land's Hot in Cleveland (Wednesday, 10/9c), you might find yourself wistfully recalling the old Carol Burnett Show theme: "I'm so glad we had this time together." This is especially true for the iconic buddy duo of Mary and Rhoda, with Mary Tyler Moore appearing even more frail than Valerie Harper, whose inspiring public battle with brain cancer pretty much defines the quality once attributed to Mary Richards: "spunk."

The League Casts Andre’s Parents, Promises "Miserable" Wedding in Season 5

Paul Scheer

Andre may not have won the Shiva Bowl on The League last season, but did he end the season on a big personal high note.

"As we left last season, Andre and Trixie were engaged so we are picking up right where that left off with a wedding," co-creator and executive producer Jeff Schaffer said at the Television Critics Association fall TV previews Friday. "I think Andre and Trixie are preparing the... read more
