Celebs Pay Their Respects to Patrick Swayze

Patrick Swayze

In a testament to his wide-ranging career, tributes to Patrick Swayze poured in from all corners Monday: from former co-stars, younger actors inspired by his work, and even the New York Yankees.

"Patrick was a rare and beautiful combination of raw masculinity and amazing grace," said Jennifer Grey of her Dirty Dancing co-star. "Gorgeous and strong, he was a real cowboy with a tender heart. He was fearless and insisted on always doing his own stunts, so it was not surprising to me that the war he waged on his cancer was so courageous and dignified."

The original "baby" in the corner went on to say, "When I think of him, I think of... read more

NBC Unveils Fall Lineup, Including Parenthood, Two Medical Dramas & More Thursday SNLs

Peter Krause, Seth Meyers

NBC has revealed "Part 1" of its plan for the 2009-10 TV season, and it includes a second season of Parks and Recreation, a half-dozen installments of Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday, and four new dramas.

In addition to renewing Parks and Rec, NBC also officially picked up Heroes for a fourth (albeit likely shortened) season. Previously announced returns include The Office, 30 Rock, Law & Order: SVU, Friday Night Lights, The Biggest Loser and Celebrity Apprentice.

Conspicuously missing from NBC's press release is Medium, despite ... read more

Saturday Night Live: "Weekend Update Thursday" 10.9.08

This is the first of four specials that Saturday Night Live will be airing on Thursday nights. Rumor has it that at some point, Sarah Palin, will make an appearance as Tina Fey, which, with the two appearing on the same show, may result in the apocalypse. But, in the meantime, we got a special appearance from SNL alum Chris Parnell and a fantastic surprise midway through the first sketch to ask a question: Bill Murray!

Opening Sketch: CNN – The Presidential Debate

Fred Armisen plays Obama, Darrell Hammond plays McCain and Chris Parnell plays Tom Brokaw … and they all nail each one's mannerisms and voice cadences. Well done! "Tom" says the candidates only get 25 seconds to answer one of the "eight least interesting questions" he's picked and they'll only get three second response. Ha! This is clearly playing off the fact that Brokaw was more of a time referee than a moderator at the debate. The candidates can be real windbags, no? And, I say that with patriotic affection. It also tickles my fancy is that Casey Wilson and Bill Hader ask the questions exactly like the deer-caught-in-headlights "folks" who were featured at the debate. Obama answers questions in his staccato signature style, and McCain tries to come off as a bad ass before calling the audience members by the wrong name and walking into Obama's camera frame ...

Seth Meyers: "No Truth" to Sarah Palin Appearing on SNL

Sarah Palin and Seth Meyers

The most anticipated showdown this week may not happen.

Contrary to rumors, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is not scheduled to appear on Thursday's primetime edition of Saturday Night Live, Seth Meyers told New York's Newsday.

"Of those specific rumors, there's no truth," he said. "We do have an open door policy, but there's nothing specific yet, but our window of opportunity is ...

SNL's Seth Meyers Steps Behind the Camera for The Line

Saturday Night Live's Seth Meyers stopped by our TVGuide.com studios to talk about his new online series, The Line. We're used to seeing Meyers serving up laughs as co-anchor of the hilarious "Weekend Update" (among other skits), but this time actor-writer decided to direct the seven webisodes about two friends who wait in line for 11 days to get primo spots for the opening showing of the (fictional) movie, Future Space. I had the chance to ask Meyers about stepping behind the lens for the first time, working with his SNL castmates Bill Hader and Jason Sudeikis and if he's ready to direct again. — Erin Fox read more

The TV Weekend: Oscars and SNL

It was Oscar's 80th birthday, but it only felt like Sunday night's show went on for 70 years. (Official count: three hours, 20 minutes.) It’s an annual ritual, beating up on the annual Academy Awards broadcast for being too long, bloated, boring. That can especially be a problem when the show is as free of surprise as this year's was — true, Marion Cotillard's victory over Julie Christie for best actress was unexpected (though well earned), and I loved her gracious and giddy speech (one of the night's few truly memorable and spontaneous moments), but seriously, how many people saw either of their movies? In a year when most of the major film contenders fell something short of cultural phenomena, it's up to the host to make the show relevant and dynamic. Jon Stewart had his work cut out for him, with precious little prep time thanks to the writers’ strike, not to mention the preoccupation of an ongoing, historic presidential campaign that inspired some of his best jokes... read more

"Really?" Is TV's New "Seriously"? Really?

As the new fall season of television rolls along, one thing is becoming very clear: ABC still seems determined to reschedule solid, would-be-thriving shows into prime-time Siberia.OK, make that two things that have become evident. The other being that "Really?" — almost always employed in tandem with its cousin, "Really?" — is TV dialogue's new "Seriously.""Seriously," of course, enjoyed a long and hallowed run due in large part to the doctors of Grey's Anatomy who trotted it out about as often as Meredith had a long-lost half-/demi-/step-sibling surface. But like any good catchphrase/go-to lingo, "Seriously" seems to have gracefully taken a back seat to the new quip in town.I'm sure that some reader (William Safire, are you out there?) can better document the origin of "Really?" so I make no attempt to do so here. I will note, however, that Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update team last May created a recurring feature titled "Really!?! with Seth and Amy," in which they ta... read more

Sci Fi Channel announced at the summer TCA press tour that cult fave Farscape is returning in the form of a 10-part broadband-channel series. The cabler is also giving Battlestar Galactica fans an eight-part series of broadcast "minisodes" concerning the original Cylon war and leading up to the Nov. 24 premiere of the full-length "Razor." These shorts and the full episode will then be packaged together on a DVD, as well as offered on the channel's website. Sci Fi's new offerings in development include The Awesomes, an animated series from SNL's Seth Meyers; Going Homer, an Odyssey-inspired six-hour miniseries from Farscape star Ben Browder and producer Andrew Prowse; and God, Inc., a sitcom about His administrative staff. read more

SNL Boss Explains Cuts, Unveils WU Team

Addressing the streamlining of Saturday Night Live's ensemble for the new season, Lorne Michaels tells the Associated Press that since the only alternative was to put out fewer shows, he chose to bid farewell to Horatio Sanz, Chris Parnell and Finesse Mitchell instead. "Like a garden that gets overgrown, [SNL] needed to be pruned," he says, adding that the smaller cast also means "everyone gets enough playing time." Michaels also confirms that "The Needlers" will reunite at the WU desk when Seth Meyers, having bested three others up for the gig, replaces Tina Fey alongside Amy Poehler. SNL returns Sept. 30, with Dane Cook as host. TV Guide hears that Earl's Jaime Pressly will front the show the following week. read more

SNL Vet Weighs In on the New Buzz

Seth Meyers, Saturday Night Live

Despite seeing presidential hopeful John Kerry (and thus his portrayal) get snubbed in 2004, Seth Meyers has never stopped being a major part of the mix at NBC's Saturday Night Live (Saturdays, duh, at 11:30 pm/ET). As he prepped for this weekend's show, Meyers — now best known for his bits as haranguing hubby Dan Needler and the Appalachian Emergency Room receptionist, as well as for his impressions of Hugh Grant, Sean Penn and Anderson Cooper — found a few minutes to talk to TVGuide.com about SNL's plans for guest host Matt Dillon, the "real" Natalie Portman and the crazy-delicious digital-shorts read more
