Parenthood Boss and Stars on Saying Goodbye to the Bravermans

Parenthood's Season 5 finale could've easily served as a series ending, and a satisfying one at that, so much so that both the drama's showrunner and its stars wondered if the network would feel it was the right place to end.

"I got nervous watching [the finale] because I felt like, that kind of leaves it in a place where the network can very easily say, 'Oh, that's a nice ending to a series," Peter Krause told a theater full of fans Saturday at the show's ATX Television Festival panel, moderated by this reporter. Added showrunner Jason Katims, "This year, I honestly was hedging my bets. More than any other [season], I didn't know whether the show was going to come back and I thought it was a good chance we wouldn't."

Parenthood Boss on Jason Ritter's Return, Amber and Ryan's Reunion, "Hope" for Joel and Julia

Sarah Braverman's relationship status has been complicated pretty much as long as Parenthood has been on the air.

Whether it's her on-and-off (and on-and-off) relationship with Mark Cyr (Jason Ritter), her messy work romance with Hank (Ray Romano), or her recent flirty fling with her neighbor Carl (Josh Stamberg), Sarah's love life has never been truly stable. But just when Sarah (Lauren Graham) seemed to be heading in the right direction — i.e. picking her work over a guy — Mark returns on Thursday's episode (10/9c, NBC) to shake things up again.

Ask Matt: Blacklist, Coven, Nashville, Parenthood and NBC's Thursday Comedies

Question: I'm enjoying The Blacklist thus far and would watch it for James Spader's performance alone, but I'm also enjoying the stories as well. NBC is sticking to a formula that has worked before, albeit on a sister network. The intriguing loner, at odds with a government agency, solving the case of the week with the help of his associates, with a through story that's addressed for a few minutes at the start and end of each episode, just enough to keep the serial nature of the story going. Am I the only one who thinks that The Blacklist is Burn Notice with a network budget? If the show is successful, NBC will end up as an expensive version of USA Network. Not there's anything wrong with that. — Rick

Private Practice Series Finale: Did Addison Get Her Happy Ending?

[Warning: This story contains major spoilers from the series finale of Private Practice. Read at your own risk!]

When Addison (Kate Walsh) showed up at Seattle Grace in the Season 1 finale of Grey's Anatomy, we hated her. She was the salmon-scrub wearing wife of Derek, and darn it, we wanted McDreamy and Mer to get their happy ending. But by the time executive producer Shonda Rhimes sent Addison packing for the Private Practice spin-off, we truly loved her. We hoped she'd find a way to have a child. We hoped she'd find love. We'd hope she'd find happiness. In Tuesday's Private Practice series finale, Addison had finally found it all... read more

Ask Matt: Parenthood, Good Wife, Fox Dramas, Last Resort and Other Cancellations

Question: How do you feel about the subject matter on Parenthood this season? Some of my favorite moments on the show have always been the lighthearted sibling moments with the jokes and teasing. Those moments are all but gone as the Kristina storyline has taken precedence this year. From the Twitter and Facebook comments I've read, it is really ringing realistically to many viewers. The show is handling it with grace, but it's so very heavy that it seems like a departure for a show that has always had a good dose of comedy in each episode. I doubt that they're gaining viewers this year. My fear is that for a show that has always seemed to get renewed by the skin of its teeth, this feels like the end. Do you have any insight as to ratings or where it stands with NBC? — Jennifer

Ask Matt: The New Gay Normal, Last Resort, Revolution, Vegas, More

Send questions and comments to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow me on Twitter!

Question: With the introduction this year of new comedies like the promising The New Normal and the dreadful Partners featuring prominent characters who are gay, I was wondering what you think of the current state of gay characters represented on TV. In some ways while I am thrilled to see more representation of the gay community on television, I have to admit I was disheartened by the same stereotypical, flamboyant gay characters once again being represented. Haven't we moved past this? I do think we have some very positive portrayals today in shows like Glee and Grey's Anatomy, but this just seems like a step backwards. What are your thoughts? — Rob

The Weekly Watercooler: Debates, Waterworks and Nail-Biters

A quick look back at some of what got this critic talking about TV this week:

THE MAIN EVENT: Now that's how you do a TV debate, as the veep candidates squared off Thursday night in a lively encounter that made for great TV, unlike last week's unfocused and lost-in-the-weeds presidential face-off. Rousing, contentious, scrappy, with an actively engaged moderator... read more
