Once upon a time, I'd watch FX's Sons of Anarchy begrudgingly because it was popular. Now I'm watching because it's good. As in bad. As in: bad things happening to bad people. Consequences = drama. And that's rarely been more evident than as the fifth season gets underway Tuesday (10/9c), with the motorcycle club torn apart from within and without, capped by an act of retribution that's horrific even by this show's violent standards.

Question: Let's play armchair programmer. While I am enjoying Major Crimes, it does feel a bit like we're just waiting for Brenda Leigh to show. Do you think they could have benefited from holding Major Crimes until the traditional December run of The Closer to let us get a little distance? Or is it purely a creative question? "We owe it to the audience to remind them from time to time that there is real jeopardy here," says executive producer Matt Corman of the July 10 jaw-dropping season opener. "Working as a CIA operative has real stakes." It also has perks: So far, production has taken the cast to Morocco, Puerto Rico and Barcelona, and "we have Moscow and the Dominican Republic planned," says Corman's fellow exec producer Chris Ord. "We're hoping to do Dubai. It's a spy show; people expect to go abroad, and that we are able to is really exciting."
