Rules of Engagement Comes Off the Bench Again — Perhaps for the Last Time

The last time Tom Hertz looked forward to the Super Bowl ending was 2007. His show Rules of Engagement premiered the next day to what remains its best numbers ever. Six years later, Hertz found himself in a similar position. Rules' seventh — and perhaps final — season premieres Monday (8:30/7:30c, CBS).

"I am shocked we didn't get [the post-Super Bowl slot]," Hertz jokes to TVGuide.com. "But if this it, then I guess we've come full circle. It's been a long, windy road."

Winter TV: Get the scoop on your favorite returning shows

Or more like bumpy. The well-rated sitcom has lived a topsy-turvy existence, between its schedule-hopping, bubble status and lack of a permanent timeslot. Even its 13-episode Season 7, which will bring the show to 100 episodes, was hard ...

Weekend TV Review: TGIF on ABC, OMG Moments on Sunday Favorites

I'm a sucker for tradition, and there are probably worse ideas than ABC reviving the "TGIF" concept of family-friendly sitcoms on Friday night. Depending on your generation, you may find yourself thinking nostalgically of watching The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family with the babysitter, or growing up with the Full House-Family Matters-Boy Meets World-Perfect Strangers brand of ABC comedy. Hold on to those memories, because unfortunately, there are few shows this season worse or more grating than tonight's Malibu Country (8:31/7:31c), where the beachfront corn grows awfully and annoyingly high.read more

Reba McEntire admits there are some similarities between her new ABC show Malibu Country and her last sitcom Reba. But she thinks that works to the new show's advantage.

"Both are great... entertaining shows [that] the whole family can sit down and watch," the 57-year-old country superstar tells TVGuide.com.

Critic's Guide to Wednesday TV: Damages Ends, X Collides With Voice

Dark and twisty from start to finish, the legal thriller Damages doesn't quite deliver on its season-long promise to give bloodthirsty rivals Patty Hewes and Ellen Parsons the courtroom showdown many fans have long awaited. Which doesn't mean tonight's series finale (DirecTV's Audience Network, 9/8c) is short on fireworks between Glenn Close (a two-time Emmy winner as Patty) and Rose Byrne, who by the time the various convoluted plot strands play out, conclude "we both have plenty of blood on our hands."

Bloody, yes, if at times a bit... read more

Critic's Notebook: The ABC's of TCA

Where were you when the Modern Family talent deal finally went down? If you were a member of the Television Critics Association, or one of the creators of ABC's most popular and acclaimed comedy, you were at the network's Friday night post-press tour party. You could actually feel the tension go out of the room — a tension that had clouded much of ABC's TCA day, a major distraction for entertainment president Paul Lee, who tersely deflected questions about cast negotiations during his press session. read more

Is Malibu Country Just Reba 2.0?

A half-hour comedy about a woman named Reba who splits from her longtime husband after she learns he's been cheating on her? Yes, Reba McEntire's new ABC series Malibu Country sounds a tad (read: a lot) like her old series, The CW's Reba.

But the show's executive producers, including Reba executive producer Kevin Abbott, insist this is not just a redo. "We don't just want to do... read more
