February 15, 2007: Crisis of Conscience

Thankfully tonights episode brought us back to the interesting cases and patients that draw out the best and the worst in our favorite ER doctors and nurses We were also treated to some more superlative guest-acting Sean Young is certainly no Forest Whitaker but she was poignant and sympathetic in her portrayal of the mother suspiciously dying from liver failure Though I wasnt the least bit surprised that the hateful older son was complicit in her scheme to slowly kill herself without jeopardizing the insurance money for her sons I did think this was an interesting way to once again call Gates moral compass into question Lukas assessment of Gates ability to lie without a second thought was spot-on It was interesting to juxtapose this story against Neelas refusal to participate in Manishs surgey due to her own reservations about his motives for donating a kidney Frankly I was somewhat surprised at Dubenkos pragmatic approach read more

January 8, 2007: The Three Amigos

Happy New Year to all the fans of The Class. Are the critics finally getting to me? All I've heard since the start of the show was the word "uneven." Up until this episode, I thought the show was friggin' hilarious. But with this one, I too thought it was "uneven." There were many funny moments. In fact, more funny moments in this episode than According to Jim has had in its entire run. But there were also many jokes that just fell completely flat. To me, this was a case of: How many jokes can we cram into 22 minutes?Maybe my thoughts are changing because I hate Palmer. Jaime King isn't bad to look at, but her character is annoying. Honestly, I'm not that familiar with the career of King to know whether this is bad acting or a poorly developed character. But either way, I'm with Kat on this one — Palmer needs to bite the dust. Or maybe my thoughts are changing because I hate Fern. True, she brings comic relief to everyone around her, like Nicole and Duncan with their line: "Oh,... read more

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, The Class: What's Next for Richie and Lina?

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, The Class

I suppose you could say that Jesse Tyler Ferguson is so happy with his gig on CBS' The Class (Mondays at 8:30 pm/ET) that he could, well, kill himself. But that's more his character's domain. Playing hapless Richie Velch on How I Met Your Mother's sister show, he has dabbled with despair-filled attempts on his own life, but seemingly has been saved by the love of a good woman, Lina (Heather Goldenhersh). The only problem until now, aside from his tendency to run people over, is Richie's wife, Fern (Roseanne's Sara Gilbert). TVGuide.com asked Ferguson for a look at what's ahead. TVGuide.com: The guy who writes our read more

Sara Gilbert has appeared in ...

Question: Sara Gilbert has appeared in prior seasons of ER as Jane, a cynical medical student who was soon to become an intern. In last week's episode (Nov. 24) she was a nurse who caught Crenshaw's eye. Why did her character suddenly change from doctor to nurse?
Answer: She didn't change career paths, she merely changed clothes. If you remember, Jane had to change out of her scrubs (after being memorably thrown up on) into a girly pajama-style top that embarrassed her terribly. She looked like a nurse, and Crenshaw (now my least favorite ER character, next to the irredeemable Morris) mistook her for one. No one corrected him, I'm assuming because they all thought it was so funny that this jerk had found a soul mate whom he'll probably consider beneath him ... read more

November 23, 2006: Scoop and Run

I have to say theres nothing like a big sweeps event to help digest all the turkey mashed potatoes stuffing and to-die-for corn cakes in my house all courtesy of my husbands amazing culinary skills Hope you ER fans enjoyed a yummy Thanksgiving feast of your own before settling in for a brand new episodeTonight in keeping with the spirit of the season I would like to focus on the theme of thankfulness First I am so thankful that Maura Tierney continues to get a chance to shine Tonight she was right back in the spotlight as Abbys plans for an idyllic holiday with her new family were derailed As if getting dragged away for a pointless transport wasnt bad enough she had to deal with being dropped into a ravine to assist at the sight of a horrific bus accident The scenes with young Milo and his mother were heart-breaking but I had a feeling that Abby would go back for her with an assist from her surly transport partner Together they saved the da read more

November 13, 2006: Who's Lina Warbler?

For our first jaunt into the blogging world of The Class, let's play a little game. It's called, "Where they were, where they are now, and what I think" or WTWWTANAWIT for short. Sorry, it's a work in progress. Seriously though, since we're jumping in the middle, we'll do a quick recap. And then I'll tell you where I'm at, so you can get a feel where I'm coming from. Where they were:Ethan Hass (Jason Ritter)and Kat Warbler (Lizzy Caplan) have become good buddies. They hang together a lot, and you just know sooner or later they are going to kiss. But right now, she likes pushing him to his limit. Where they are now: Kat apparently likes pictures of body parts that are unattached, or simply gross. She shows Richie a picture of a buttock which he rightfully points out "you rarely see them out alone." Ethan finally told his date that he wasn't Dan Slutsky. And he still thought he'd get to keep her! Ha. What I think:Ethan is growing on me. I didn't liked the character at the start, but s... read more

FALL-TV UPDATE!

Variety reports that Sara Gilbert (Twins, Roseanne) and Maulik Pancholy (Weeds) have joined the ABC pilot Girls on the Bus, about reporters covering a political campaign.... The Hollywood Reporter has Jessica Lucas (She's the Man) and Alona Tal (Veronica Mars) scoring roles on CW's Split Decision, Karen LeBlanc joining CW's Runaway, and John Ducey and Colby Paul getting cast on Fox's Union Jackass. (Am I allowed to say "jackass" here? In a non-K-Fed story?) read more

Will Sara Gilbert still be ...

Question: Will Sara Gilbert still be seen as much on ER now that she's one of the stars of the new WB Twins (although I don't know how that show will last — it's pretty poor in my opinion)?
Answer: Must be a theme of today's column. Twins doesn't have to do that well to survive on WB's Friday comedy lineup, but as long as it lasts (and I'm with you that it's not a keeper), Sara won't be showing up at County General. A studio rep confirmed for me that her scenes on the first episode of ER's new season were shot at the end of last season, before her sitcom got picked up ... read more

Remember when there was a new...

Remember when there was a new Darren on Bewitched? How about when Chris on The Partridge Family changed? Then there was a new Steven on Dynasty and, of course, a new Becky on Roseanne (and then back to the old). Now we have a new Alex on ER. Alex, just to remind you, is Samantha's diabetic son, and he's now being played by Dominic Janes. Maybe Oliver Davis had to do full-time work on Rodney? Anyway, I noticed it right away, even though at first they were using clever camera work so he was only seen from far away. I laughed when the detective told Sam (after Alex's photo was distributed): "Nobody recognized your son." Of course they didn't; he's being played by someone else. Glad for Sam's sake that she finally found him and that he's OK. But her journey getting to the missing Alex included a scene that brought back nasty memories for me. I must admit that I once fell asleep at the wheel — not a pretty time in my history. read more
