At the Movies: Spider-Man Helmer Lurks in The Shadow

Per the Hollywood Reporter, Columbia Pictures has acquired the screen rights to The Shadow, to at least be produced, if not directed, by Sam Raimi. The pulp hero, born from a 1931 radio series, last was played on film by Alec Baldwin.... Sandra Bullock is One of the Guys in a comedy about a real "guy's gal" who labors to embrace her feminine side, and apparently never rented Miss Congeniality.... The Longest Yard director Peter Segal will lens a comedy about the very first Olympics, penned by Craig and Jeff Cox (of Will Ferrell's forthcoming Blades of Glory).... Dimension Films has acquired North American rights to Storm Warning, a Deliverance-esque Aussie horror pic about a husband and wife on a fishing trip that goes terribly wrong. Because so many husband-wife fishing trips go wonderfully.SIDE NOTE: Speaking of movies, check out my fresh Trivial Matt'rs entry to see how I think the new Rocky film serves as a finish to the series. read more

Project Runway I know it's not...

Project RunwayI know it's not unusual, but it's so unfortunate that the finalists had to pull an all-nighter right before the biggest event of their career so far. Even after sewing all night, Daniel had what looked like either the show's assistants or the models themselves sewing on buttons backstage. But onstage you couldn't tell any of this, especially when he did a happy little jig for his family. I am still drooling over the white coat and the shirt with the dipping back. And I hope his and Chloe's dresses with pockets (along with Amy Adams' and Sandra Bullock's Oscar dresses) are the start of a trend. On the other hand, the first jacket looked like a couch, and when Rebecca tripped away in that brown dress, I could see M read more

The Apprentice Season 4 runner-up Rebecca Jarvis — whom I always fancied as the love child of Sandra Bullock and Evangeline Lilly — is joining CNBC as an associate reporter, says Broadcasting & Cable. Gee, I hope Randall OK'd this. read more

Joan Melissa LIVE at the Academy...

George Clooney

Joan & Melissa LIVE at the Academy Awards5:30: I'm so glad my colleagues over at the channel have decided to go blue for the red carpet. Setting the tone for the evening, Joan Rivers begins with a slightly disturbing scene in which she spreads 'em for Matt Dillon in Crash and groans a lot. And she warns us that there are many more such scenes from the nominated movies to come. Next she gives a nod to Isaac Mizrahi's infamously presumptuous Golden Globes coverage at rival E!. "I would never be so presumptuous!" she declares while she pokes Lisa Rinna in the boob. Instead of groping her interviewees, she'll be using cards to indicate whether they are wearing underwear and/or have real breasts. This'll be interesting. 5:33: Joan gives her own thank-you speech tailor-made to offend her entire crew: "We are color-blind here at TV Guide. Right, black person?" Then she fills the time read more

The 78th Annual Academy Awards...

Jon Stewart

The 78th Annual Academy Awards 8:01: The opening scene just demonstrates why we love Jon Stewart: No one does self-deprecation so funny. Not even George Clooney. I think my dog would look great in a Steve Martin wig. 8:05: At first, the Hollywood royalty aren't laughing quite as hard as I am at Jon's jokes — especially not at the one about the suffering caused by movie piracy. But nothing brings people together like a Bjork joke. (She was trying on her gown and Cheney shot her!) And then the gay Western montage. Not even Stewart knows how to follow up that hilarity, so I'm not even gonna try. Brilliant. 8:16: Nicole Kidman's weird intro for the best-supporting-actor nominees has me thinking right away that Clooney will win. And then he does; self-deprecation keeps working wonders. "So I'm not winning director." The music starts after about 10 sec read more

It seems like every other ...

Question: It seems like every other movie I see advertised is based on a TV show, like The Dukes of Hazzard. But what about the other way around? I know there was a series based on My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but what other TV series have been based on a movie, and were any of them good?

Answer: There have been a handful of top-notch TV shows based on movies. The flop Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) was revived as Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003); Robert Altman's acerbic M*A*S*H* (1970) became the long-running M*A*S*H (1972-1983); Neil Simon read more
