Underpinning Soul Men's high-energy hilarity is an unmistakable theme of mortality — a strange coincidence following the unexpected deaths of two costars, Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes.
Samuel L. Jackson, who plays an aging member of a former soul group alongside Mac, says the theme leaves him solemn and optimistic.
"I'll be 60 in December, so, I look at that, and I look in the mirror, and I still don't look like somebody I thought would look like this at 60," he told TVGuide.com "So, I think about it."
In Soul Men, which opened Friday, Jackson's and Mac's characters struggle to reckon with their elder years as they try to revive their brief stardom decades after their one-hit-wonder trio split up. Their cross-country road trip is punctuated by foot-tapping song and dance performances, slapstick-driven antics, encounters with the past and even a little legal trouble.

Samuel L. Jackson has the right stuff to play Sho'nuff.
The actor is set to star in a remake of the 1985 cult martial arts classic The Last Dragon, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
Originated by the late Julius Carry, Sho'nuff is the self-proclaimed Shotgun of Harlem, who answers his own questions (e.g. "Am I the baddest mofo lowdown around this town?") with "Sho'nuff."
Something tells us, Jackson won't have any trouble playing the "baddest mofo."

Spike TV's critically-acclaimed animé series, Afro Samurai, will be returning with all its sword-wielding action in an original movie event — Afro Samurai: Resurrection. Samuel L. Jackson will be reprising his starring role as Afro (and playing executive producer), and the movie will also feature special guest star Lucy Liu as the voice of Sio, the seductive yet sadistic brains behind the plot to put an end to Afro Samurai. Based on the art and story of manga artist Takashi Okazaki, Afro Samurai tells the tale of Afro, his sidekick Ninja Ninja, and their quest to seek vengeance for his father's murder. Jackson has signed a two-year, first-look deal with CBS Paramount Network TV, under which he will develop and exec-produce projects through his Uppity Films shingle. Jackson is also open to the occasional on-camera appearance à la Ugly Betty boss Salma Hayek (though presumably sporting less cleavage).
