Matt's TV Week in Review

No, it wasn't an April Fool's curtain-raiser. Watching the "very special" musical episode of Grey's Anatomy, I was reminded of the even more "very special" live episode of ER back at its height in 1997. My reaction now is as it was then: Take a bow, everyone, and promise never to do it again. The episode itself, a classic Grey's multi-hankie trauma-rama, would have worked just as well (if not better) without the distracting gimmick, dramatizing the frenzied aftermath of pregnant Callie's grievous car injury and coma as the staff of "Seattle Grace Mercy Death" (Alex's inspired new nickname) scrambles and argues at length, and sometimes in song, about how to save her and the baby, which is delivered alarmingly premature — and thankfully does not burst into an aria...

Nurse Jackie (Monday, 10/9c, Showtime)
Premium cable's finest (dark) comedy returns for a third season, with the pill-addicted nurse (Edie Falco) as stubbornly defiant as ever, even as the fabric of lies she has constructed between her family life and the hospital continues to shred. Jackie's desperation is as harrowing as it amusing, but there's plenty more going on as... read more

CW Announces Its Fall Lineup

On Wednesday night, CW's top-rated series, America's Next Top Model, showed double-digit growth last season and was the No. 1 show in its time slot with women 18-34. Next season, America's Next Top Model will stay in its 8-9 pm berth, followed by the new drama Gossip Girl from 9-10 pm. From The O.C. producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, Gossip Girl is based on the best-selling young-adult book series of the same name. The show features an ensemble cast of new and veteran actors, including Blake Lively (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) and Leighton Meester (Surface), and chronicles the struggle for social supremacy among teens in a posh Manhattan prep school. The fun, sexy and dramatic hour is a perfect companion piece for Top Model's strong female audience, making Wednesday "Girls Night In" on The CW. On Thursday — television's most competitive night — Smallville and Supernatural deliver a solid mix of male and female viewers. On Friday, the wildly popular ... read more

If anyone can answer my ...

Question: If anyone can answer my question, you can. Back in high school my teacher was always talking about this show that aired in the late '80s about a group of high-school students who put together a news program at their school. Please tell me what show this is, and if there are any episodes out on DVD. Thank you.

Answer: Your teacher was talking about TV 101, a short-lived CBS drama in which Sam Robards, a former TV-news photographer, returned to his old high school to teach a class how to put together a weekly news show about the goings-on in their school. His old journalism teacher (Emilie Walker) was able to talk him into taking the job when he was looking for a new career, but the crusty school principal (Leon Russom), with whom Robards had butted heads in his student days, was always on his case. Among the students in Robards' class were Stacey Dash, Alex Desert, Teri Polo and fu read more
