Whispers inside CNN say American Idol host Ryan Seacrest has the inside track to replace Larry King on the network's nightly talkfest.MSNBC reports that Seacrest, who has subbed for King on numerous occasions, is in "serious negotiations" and could replace Capt. Suspenders by year's end.King, who has hosted Larry King Live since 1985, told the New York Times last year that when he decides to step down, Seacrest would be the perfect replacement. "He's the classic generalist," King said. Slow Down, American Idol | Roush Dispatch | 4/30/2008
I can’t believe I’m saying this, not exactly being a champion of Fox’s tendency to let American Idol spread across the schedule like untamed kudzu, but Tuesday’s overstuffed Neil Diamond episode should have been at least 90 minutes. Not that it left me wanting more — anything but — but could the show itself have been more of a train wreck? (And I’m not just talking Jason Castro here.) Cramming 10 performances, and the usual inane “mentor” moments, into a single hour had Ryan Seacrest going from 33 1/3 to 78 rpm — for those who remember turntables — and poor Paula Abdul even more confused than usual, thinking she’d heard Jason sing twice. (I get it, though. When Jason sings these days, it’s like time stands still and the world goes into a musical coma.)Didn’t Ryan say when the show started that the judges were going to hold their comments until after the second performance? OK, so I have to "out" myself here: I, Erin Fox, am a Broadway musical junkie. I know a lot of Broadway shows and used to (gulp) sing along to them in the car as a high school drama geek. This explains a lot, including my lack of dates in high school. But I digress — tonight's show is about the Top 6 and their quest to conquer Andrew Lloyd Webber songs. In his heyday, his musicals were amazing (Evita)... and then there was Aspects of Love — no comment. Also, I'll do my best to keep the CATS jokes to a minimum. On with the show!Syesha Mercado, "One Rock and Roll too Many:" Syesha finally sounds like she's hit her niche. She looks fabulous with a capital F. Michael Johns was still reeling from his shocking Idol ousting when he spoke with reporters on a Friday conference call. "I would be lying if I said I wasn't shocked," he said. "I hadn't been in the bottom three and I thought definitely the last two or three weeks had been my strongest."Despite his surprise, however, the Aussie bears no hard feelings — at least not toward Ryan Seacrest and that awkward elimination moment. During the Thursday show, the host made the ejection all the more confounding by mentioning, once Carly and Syesha were safe, that at the time of last year's Idol Gives Back, no one was eliminated. Johns, though, was sent packing anyway. With his typical smooth style, Johns said he understands the name of the game is good television, and that's how it goes.
