Generated "next big thing" buzz while fronting the country-rock band Whiskeytown. The group made their recording debut in 1996 with Faithless Street but disbanded three years later.

Developed a reputation as a highly prolific songwriter when he put out three studio albums in a period of just eight months during 2005: Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights and 29.
