  • Friends and Colleagues Remember Beatrice Arthur | Today's News: Our Take | 4/27/2009

Beatrice Arthur's friends and colleagues remembered the Emmy- and Tony-winning actress as a brave force in comedy whose talent and voice were one of a kind.

"I knew it would hurt, I just didn't know it would hurt this much," said Betty White, Arthur's Golden Girls costar. "I'm so happy that she ...

  • Logo's Sordid Lives Start to Unravel July 23 | Today's News: Our Take | 4/7/2008
What could be bad about any project that puts '80s icons Rue McClanahan and Olivia Newton-John together in one scene? Add the outrageous Leslie Jordan and Caroline Rhea, toss in Bonnie Bedelia and veteran actress Beth Grant (No Country for Old Men) and you have Logo's Sordid Lives: The Series. Based on the 1996 play and 2000 film of the same name, the half-hour show chronicles a "dysfunctional family" in Winters, Texas. And yes, there's the Logo-obligatory handsome young wannabe actor (newcomer Jason Dottley) who's struggling to come out to his Republican Baptist family. Look for Sordid Lives to premiere on Wednesday, July 23, at 10 pm/ET. — Ileane Rudolph read more

  • Who sang the theme song for ... | Today's News: Our Take | 9/29/2005

Question: Who sang the theme song for The Golden Girls?

Answer: Cynthia Fee sang an abbreviated version of Andrew Gold's "Thank You for Being a Friend" for the show, which, as you know, ran on NBC from 1985-92 and starred Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty as four seniors living in Miami.

The song was a Top 25 hit from Gold's 1978 album, All This and Heaven Too. The singer-songwriter (a term popularized when you needed to do at least one to have a career in the music business) had a previous Top 5 hit with "Lonely Boy" in 1976 and, putting in time as a producer, studio musician and songwriter for others, has worked with such notable talent as Linda Ronstadt, Karla Bonoff, James Taylor, Ringo Starr, Brian Wilson, Jackson Browne, Don Henley, Dia read more

  • Party Boy Meets The Golden Girls | Today's News: Our Take | 11/22/2004
Long before Party Boy became the handsome Hollywood scenester y'all know and envy (coughyeah, rightcough), I was a geeky, teenage loner who watched back-to-back reruns of The Golden Girls every day after school. Like many GG devotees, I longed to move in with Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia to trade sassy barbs, nosh on cheesecake, luxuriate on their tasteful, oh-so-Floridian wicker furnishings, sun myself on "the lanai," and just be part of their loving makeshift family. So you can only imagine Party Boy's orgasmic delight upon receiving an invite to GG's party for their first-season DVD (out this week) at the Museum of TV and Radio in Beverly Hills. Of course, the chance to meet my girls (and score a free DVD) would've been reason enough to attend, but the big bonus was the inside gossip! Besides the first season's episodes, the DVD includes feisty fashion commentary from TV Guide Channel's own Joan and Melissa River read more
