In 1976, he made his off-Broadway debut in The Architect and the Emperor of Assyria. His Broadway debut followed in 1979 in the dark fable Teibele and Her Demon.
Nominated for a 1982 Genie Award for Best Foreign Actor for the prehistoric drama Quest for Fire, his big-screen acting debut.
Underwent four hours of makeup each day for his role as Vincent in the late-'80s fantasy series Beauty and the Beast.
Frequently appears in Mexican director Guillermo del Toro's films, including vampire drama Cronos (1993), action-horror flick Blade II (2002) and as the title character in the Hellboy series.
