Surf's Up: CBS Books Pilot for New Hawaii Five-O

CBS has given a pilot commitment to a modern version of classic 1970s cop series Hawaii Five-O, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The redo comes from Fringe co-creators and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and CSI: NY executive producer Peter Lenkov. Kurtzman and Orci are creating the story with Lenkov, who will write the script. All three will executive produce.

Fringe Burning Questions Answered!

Fringe executive producer Roberto Orci (he of Transformers fame) gave me the official word on some of your burning questions about Tuesday's premiere episode. His answers were at times enlightening, at times frustrating, and, frankly, mostly kind of weird, all apropos for a show that sprung from the odd, fertile mind of J.J. Abrams. — Mickey O'ConnorWhat's up with those symbols (leaf, frog, etc.) that appear before commercial breaks? Are they some kind of puzzle that we're supposed to "figure out"?Well, not exactly. "They are all things that look natural, but have more to them; they've been altered," says Orci. For now, he advises only that you note the order in which they appear on the series. For the record, so far we've only seen the leaf, which was floating around inside the Massive Dynamic handprint scanner in the final scene. Why was Walter Bishop institutionalized in the first place? Sure, he's eccentric, but most of the time he seems perfectly lucid."He's certainly not c... read more

Fox: On the Fringe of a Breakout Hit?

After a season rocked by a writers’ strike, shortened episode orders and a defecting audience, all eyes are turning to the new fall season and the hope of maybe a new hit or two reigniting the business.“I’d hope that this fall is a reset,” says Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly, kicking off his network’s portion of the TCA press tour Monday (following a performance and panel from summer smash So You Think You Can Dance; Reilly, for the record, stayed in his seat). “I believe in my heart it can be, particularly if there is a couple of new exciting shows joining the lineup or maybe some of the returning shows continue to find an audience.”Fox’s greatest hope this fall is unquestionably J.J. Abrams’ big-budget, high-concept sci-fi thriller Fringe, which Reilly and boss Peter Ligouri aggressively pursued. “We offered him a series day one. We knew the log line, that it was sort of The X-Files, Indiana Jones kind of thing. This show... read more

J.J. Abrams' Top-secret Sci-fi Show Lands at Fox

Following a heated bidding war, Fox backed up the Brinks truck and made a series commitment to Fringe, which was until now a super-hush-hush new project from J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Fox reportedly will pony up some $10 million for a two-hour pilot — that's on par with Lost's own debut — as well as pay a sizable $2 mil-per-episode licensing fee to Abrams' Bad Robot.Oh yeah, the premise: Fringe concerns a young female FBI agent (my favorite kind) who in the name of investigating a rash of unexplained phenomena teams with an institutionalized scientist whose life's work may be at the heart of the strange goings-on. The series' previous working title? "The Eureka Files." read more
