Robert Redford was born in Santa Monica, California on August 18, 1937. A rebellious teen, Redford struggled to find his place in the world: disenchanted with college, he hitchhiked across Europe, and began to drink heavily. In 1957, his life turned around when he met his future wife, Lola Van Wagenen. Hoping to become a professional artist, he moved to New York City to study at the prestigious Pratt Institute.
