Ricky Gervais' 10 Best and Worst Golden Globe Jabs

Ricky Gervais, The 2012 Golden Globe Awards

Was Ricky Gervais holding back this year? Hosting the Golden Globes for the third time, the comedian opened Sunday's awards show by ribbing Eddie Murphy for pulling out as Oscar host ("When the man who said yes to Norbit says no to you, you know you're in trouble") and NBC for being America's third-place network (oh, actually, fourth).

He did get in a few zingers. His five best jabs were aimed at:

His own manhood -- "No profanity: That's fine, I've got a huge vocabulary. No nudity: See that's a shame because I've got a huge [pause] vocabulary. But a... read more

Ricky Gervais on Returning to the Golden Globes: "What's the Worst That Could Happen?"

Ricky Gervais

Is Ricky Gervais nervous about hosting the Golden Globes again? Not after last year.

"What's the worst that could happen?" Gervais told reporters Friday about his upcoming third turn as emcee at HBO's winter TV previews. "I end my career once a week, if you read the press. I only do things that end my career now. That's my fun. That's my extreme sport."

Who will he offend this year? Ricky Gervais to host Golden Globes again

Gervais, 50, came under fire last year for his offensive jokes that skewered Hugh Hefner, Charlie Sheen, the cast of Sex and the City 2 and Scientologists, among others. The three-time Golden Globe winner said he thought he wasn't going to host the show again, but told reporters Friday that he changed his mind after he started reading articles saying he would never be invited back. "I did it to annoy them... read more

Ricky Gervais on Hosting the Globes: "I Do It My Way"

Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais says when he returns as host of the Golden Globes on Jan. 15, he's doing it his way — again.

"I do it my way, I get finality on everything ... and they won't know what I'm going to say until I say it," Gervais told Matt Lauer.

Gervais took a lot of heat for his jokes at last year's ceremony, and although he said he would never host the show again, he later changed his mind. "What tipped the balance was all the people that said I'd never be back," he says.

Who will he offend this year? Ricky Gervais to host Golden Globes again

But the comedian stands by his jokes. "What did I say that was untrue? I said that Robert Downey Jr. spent some time in clinics and he did. I'm not judging him by that; it's a joke," he says. "The controversy is irrelevant to me."

He also says he becomes another person in front of audiences. "The guy on stage is lot brasher, more arrogant, more confident than me. I take a deep breath and go out with swagger."

Alan Cumming Returns to Host the Britannia Awards: "It Keeps Me on My Toes"

Alan Cumming

Alan Cumming is a perfect choice to host the 2011 Britannia Awards (Sunday at 8/7c on TV Guide Network). I mean, the man won a Tony Award for playing an emcee (for Cabaret in 1998)! Plus, the Scottish actor has other skills relevant to the gig — just ask him. "I'm a little bit cheeky and a little bit mischievous," he says. "I'm quite good on my feet."

It's a good thing too, because Cumming's packed schedule — including his ongoing gig on The Good Wife, which shoots in New York — made it difficult to find time to fly to Los Angeles to host the show, let alone prepare what he will say. "It kind of keeps me on my toes and kind of feels like doing theater without having to do a play for six months," he says. "I have no script yet, but I enjoy the last minute-ness of it."

Check out red carpet arrivals from the 2011 Britannia Awards

Cumming promises that he won't be nearly as controversial as that other biting awards show host from across the pond. "I think it's a Scottish thing to... read more
