Richard Roundtree
and Pruitt Taylor Vince provided the dramatic muscle in an otherwise lightweight episode about a DOA at an MMA fight. The man once known as "the black private dick who's a sex machine to all the chicks" — Shaft! — proved he still knows his way around the ring as a sly trainer. If only Roundtree could recur, like he did in recent years on Heroes and Desperate Housewives. Maybe Simon Baker's Thomas Jane could distract himself from obsessing over Red John with a few boxing lessons?... read more

Who's Your Daddy?

Episode Recap: "The Kindness of Strangers"This wasn’t the strongest episode of the second season, but it did offer some insight. Not every chapter of a story is meant to be entertaining. Each chapter has a purpose: Some may hold solutions, while others bridge the gaps between clues. I know many have complained about the increase of characters. The truth is, in order to have death, we need more life. I can’t think of a former Hero I am ready to part with, so if a newbie bites the dust, I won’t feel so bad. However, I’d like Micah’s cousin to stick around for a while. Not the bratty wrestling fan — the other cousin. Monica Dawson is a fast learner. When Monica sees something — a somewhat simple task (I’m sure she can’t regenerate or fly by viewing) — she can mimic it. For example, she carved a tomato into a rose and used a "pro" wrestling move on a thief. I think she can only perform this “power” when she sees something o... read more

Woody Allen hopes that his new (of course) untitled film, starring Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem and (of course) Scarlett Johansson, will do for Barcelona what Manhattan did for the Big Apple.... Richard Roundtree has boarded the Wachowskis' live-action Speed Racer, playing a driver turned commentator who's a hero to Speed and a sex machine to all the chicks. read more

Going Out With a Bang (Heroes) or Not (24)

If you'd told me back in January, when 24 premiered with a riveting four-hour blast of breakneck suspense, that on the last Monday of the regular season I'd be looking more forward to Heroes' finale than 24's, I'd have frisked you for your crack pipe.Funny how things work out. As I've written in my Review column and elsewhere in my online columns, as Heroes' narrative tightened in late January and February before going into overdrive in this final May stretch, 24 began to crumble and ultimately fell apart. Leaving me wondering: When's the last time I approached a season finale of 24 with anything less than breathless anticipation? The answer: Never. Until this season. And my low expectations for Monday’s two-hour finale (it felt longer) were pretty much rewarded. The problems with 24 can be pretty well summed up in a woeful line of dialogue from Nadia, after Doyle is blinded by a faked circuit board that explodes in his face, the latest casualty who zigged where Jack would have ... read more
