Poll: Mel Is Still Beloved, Tom Cruise Still Bewilders

Further proof that people are just plain weird: In a new Gallup poll, only 12 percent of respondents said they would go out of their way to see Tom Cruise movies now, while 26 percent said they'd go the extra mile to catch a Mel Gibson flick. Furthermore, 34 percent said they wouldn't see a Cruise pic period, while only 15 percent have sworn off Gibson. Elsewhere on the chart, the far-less-controversial Tom Hanks and Reese Witherspoon were ranked our favorite actor and actress. No doubt my personal faves, Mark Feuerstein and Judy Greer, were right behind them. read more

The Hollywood Reporter's fifth-annual accounting of the biz's best-paid actresses names Nicole Kidman this year's biggest breadwinner, earning as much as $17 million per film. Legal Briefs: Reese vs Ryan, and a Baldwin Busted

Two weeks after announcing their separation, Reese Witherspoon has filed for divorce from husband Ryan Phillippe, citing — wait for it — "irreconcilable differences," seeking physical custody of their children, 7-year-old Ava and 3-year-old Deacon, and requesting exclusive use of the family residence. Reese also seems bearish on proferring any spousal support.... Daniel Baldwin (Homicide: Life on the Street) was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of stealing an SUV, and was booked for investigation of grand theft auto. This particular Baldwin's previous legal melees include crashing a rental car at 80 mph into two parked vehicles, as well as an investigation for cocaine possession. read more

Ryan Phillippe's coziness with his current leading lady, Stop Loss costar Abbie Cornish, may be what did in his marriage to Reese Witherspoon. Getting Cozy with Bedford's "Good Girl"

Tiffany Dupont, The Bedford Diaries

If The Bedford Diaries and its ribald undertones prove to be too hot for WB (or, ultimately CW) to handle, Tiffany Dupont can remove herself from any blame. After all, the perky brunette plays Sarah Gregory, the show's good girl on campus. (As "good" as one who boinks her teacher can be.) TVGuide.com spoke to Dupont about being an angel amidst Bedford's hellcats. TVGuide.com: Did you actually shoot Bedford Diaries in New York City? It sure looks like it.Tiffany Dupont: Yes, we did. We had a studio in Astoria, Queens, but were shooting on location at Barnard [College] and Columbia [University]. read more

Jon Stewart did his best, but...

Jon Stewart did his best, but it wasn't good enough. There are limitations in being a clever, self-deprecating master of irony, when what the job of Oscar host truly demands is being a showman. Which Stewart would probably be the first to admit he's not.

His humor, politically barbed but never obnoxious, was possibly a bit too sophisticated for that cavernous room. But what really defeated him, as it has almost every modern-day Oscar host except for Billy Crystal, is the deadly monotony of the Oscar show itself. What a fossiled relic. The Oscar broadcast is a classy but inert dinosaur, and this year's was more forgettable than most.

Stewart gamely tried to deflate the evening's pomposity whenever he could — after a montage on message movies, he quipped, "and none of these issues were ever a problem again" — but still, we had to sit through it all anyway.

Even with a last-minute shocker, as Crash read more
