Reba McEntire and Lily Tomlin Return to TV in ABC's Malibu Country

Jeffrey Nordling, Reba McEntire

You won't hear any talk about vittles and varmints and cee-ment ponds on Malibu Country — premiering Friday at 8:30/7:30c on ABC — but there's no denying Reba McEntire's new series owes much to The Beverly Hillbillies. This fish-out-of-water comedy stars the country-music icon as Reba Gallagher, a freshly divorced Nashville mom and former singer who moves cross-country with her two impressionable teens to live in her ex-hubby's Malibu love shack. Also in tow: Reba's anything-goes mom, Lillie Mae, played by legendary comedian Lily Tomlin. read more

Weekend TV Review: TGIF on ABC, OMG Moments on Sunday Favorites

Kaitlyn Dever, Tim Allen

I'm a sucker for tradition, and there are probably worse ideas than ABC reviving the "TGIF" concept of family-friendly sitcoms on Friday night. Depending on your generation, you may find yourself thinking nostalgically of watching The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family with the babysitter, or growing up with the Full House-Family Matters-Boy Meets World-Perfect Strangers brand of ABC comedy. Hold on to those memories, because unfortunately, there are few shows this season worse or more grating than tonight's Malibu Country (8:31/7:31c), where the beachfront corn grows awfully and annoyingly high. read more

Ask Matt: Nashville, Fringe, Castle, Suburgatory and More

John Noble, Anna Torv

Question: How? How? How is Nashville not the No. 1 rated new show? I only watched this because of your recommendation and now I am hooked. A show with multi-layered characters who have to make adult decisions that have consequences. The duet that Rayna and Deacon did at the Bluebird was sexy, sad and uncomfortable. Then the next scenes in the parking lot and when she gets home ... wow. — Gary

How Primetime Is Getting A Little Bit Country

Connie Britton

Nashville, the city, and Nashville, the country music industry, are expecting big things from Nashville, the new fall drama from ABC. The serialized drama, which stars Connie Britton as an country singer juggling her home life and struggling to remain a relevant artist, might not have made it on the air a few years ago.

But just as country music is moving toward the mainstream, the mainstream is gravitating toward country music — and TV execs, hungry for audiences, are eager to tap into country's loyal fan base. "We know from our proprietary research that about 96 million Americans qualify as country music fans, based on their listening habits and purchase behavior," says Country Music Association marketing director Cory Chapman. "That leads to a big opportunity for a network to go after that audience."

Critic's Notebook: The ABC's of TCA

Modern Family

Where were you when the Modern Family talent deal finally went down? If you were a member of the Television Critics Association, or one of the creators of ABC's most popular and acclaimed comedy, you were at the network's Friday night post-press tour party. You could actually feel the tension go out of the room — a tension that had clouded much of ABC's TCA day, a major distraction for entertainment president Paul Lee, who tersely deflected questions about cast negotiations during his press session. read more
