Originally auditioned for the part of district attorney Hamilton Burger on Perry Mason but won the lead role over Fred MacMurray and Efrem Zimbalist Jr.
When Perry Mason ended in 1966, he was the highest paid actor on TV, earning $18,500 per episode.
Told TV GUIDE in 1988 that he had deep regrets about his career-making role. "I had no close friends. I had no life whatsoever, except the show. I was alone. Mason never once in nine years had a sense of humor. Mason never once in nine years had a single good friend. Mason never once had a home to go to."
Developed a love of orchids and raised them commercially on the Fiji island of Naitauba, which he partially owned.
