Reaper's Ray Wise Raises Hell in Series' Return

Ray Wise, Reaper

Ray Wise has a legendary gift for diabolical roles — he played the character, after all, who committed perhaps the most famous murder in television history. Wise is marking his 40th year since his first film — Dare the Devil — by continuing his turn as The Devil himself in the second season of the CW's Reaper (premiering Tuesday at 8 pm/ET). read more

Has Reaper's Ray Wise Sold His Soul to the Devil?

Ray Wise, Reaper

The Devil returned in pure-evil form last week when Reaper (Thursdays at 9pm/ET, CW) resumed after a too-long-for-us break. Tonight's episode is the second of this season's eight post-strike episodes, and things are just getting fired up. We'd sell our souls to get some Reaper scoop, and fortunately the show's Devil himself, actor Ray Wise, made us a deal we couldn't refuse. He chatted us up on his demon-catching minion's future, the legacy of Leland Palmer and Satan's burning… feelings.  TVGuide.com: So how much of yourself do you bring to your character?Ray Wise: Oh, I think a great deal, like… his sense of style. I say this tongue-in-cheek, but I think it's true. The hair is pretty much my hair and the teeth are my teeth, and the way I wear a suit and tie, that's the way the Devil does it. I bring read more

First, I totally agree with ...

Question: First, I totally agree with you on Pushing Daisies. The show is an absolute delight, and I love all the little side excursions, like the backstory on the Civil War hero ancestor of the sword owner. While it's completely different, I am reminded a bit of Arrested Development, in that the show isn't afraid to take really wild chances while keeping everything in character and staying respectful of its premise. Now a question on Reaper: I'm enjoying the show, but if Sam continues to be such a slacker and show so little initiative in his life, doesn't he risk becoming really unlikable? I know the show is slowly nudging him forward, but maybe it needs to be a little faster. Of course, he is saddled (humorously) with perhaps the worst TV parents ever! Answer: Once again, can we just cheer the full-season pickup of Pushing Daisies? If Moonlight is improving by the week, I'm becoming incrementally less enchanted by Reaper by the week. Sam is a big part of the problem (through no fault ... read more

Could Ray Wise be more ...

Question: Could Ray Wise be more perfectly cast on Reaper? I don't just mean well cast, or even brilliantly cast: He is perfect on that show. He's this season's Alec Baldwin. Also, I've been thinking about the people who complain about how sexist Mad Men is. Of course, the standard response is that the show's not sexist, it's merely a depiction of sexist times. But I have noticed something a lot more subtle, and a lot more telling, namely Don's choice of women. Don married the "ideal" woman: Barbie-doll beautiful, obedient, seemingly without an opinion or will of her own, extremely well behaved. On the outside, she appears every bit the perfect trophy wife. But who are the women Don feels the most strongly attracted and continually drawn to? Midge and Rachel are strong, independent women who are the polar opposites of Betty's Waspy homemaker. In any great drama, there is so much more beneath the surface, and Mad Men is a perfect example of that. While Reaper (with the brilliant Ray ... read more

I had a chance to watch the ...

Question: I had a chance to watch the pilots for both Moonlight and Reaper. I'm a big Supernatural fan, and these ghost/vampire genre shows, when done well, are a lot of fun. To me, one of these shows demonstrates how you do it well, and one demonstrates how you do it badly. Let's start with the good: I really enjoy Reaper. The stars are likable, the writing is fun, and it genuinely made me laugh. It obviously isn't taking itself too seriously, but the effects are still nice and flashy, and let's face it: You couldn't ask for a more charming Satan than Ray Wise. I hope he gets more screen time. The creators obviously have a clear vision that the look, the music and the story all contribute to. I'll definitely keep tuning in. Now on to Moonlight — yikes! First of all, that voice-over. We get it, you're an angsty vampire. Shut up, already! I think the excessive VO makes the bad writing even worse. Because the writing is bad. So full of clichés! I wanted to laugh at the overly serious ... read more

Reaper's Ray Wise Channels the Devil Next Door

Ray Wise, Reaper

TVGuide.com caught up with Reaper's (Tuesdays, 9 pm/ET, the CW) Ray Wise to discuss his devilish new character, good versus evil, and whether or not he believes in Hell's master. TVGuide.com: You play the devil on Reaper. Are you a religious or churchgoing person?Ray Wise: I went to a Romanian Baptist church for a large part of my childhood. Since then with my own family we've gone to a Methodist church. We spread it around a little bit. My son is a religious-studies major at California State University-Northridge, and he's studying a whole variety of religions, so I'm getting the full treatment. I'm finding out all about the devil in every language and in every religion. I guess he's one of my chief consultants. [Laughs] TVGuide.com: Describe your interpretation of the devil?Wise: My devil is more like your read more

What kind of chance do you ...

Question: What kind of chance do you think the CW's Reaper has to survive? I really loved the pilot. It was clever and witty, and I found myself laughing out loud more than a few times. And I adore Ray Wise. Kudos to the casting director on that one. Last time I saw him, he was an expensive attorney helping Brenda out on The Closer. He was wickedly charming in that role, too. I'm just thinking about my beloved Veronica Mars, which was also clever and witty, with awesome casting, but sadly could not grab enough viewers. I hope the same doesn't happen to Reaper. Answer: As I suggested in the earlier answer to the Gossip Girl question, I'm reasonably confident the CW will give Reaper and the other promising newbies a fair chance to catch on. The network rarely gets reviews as positive as those for Reaper. And while I felt the second episode was a lot more sluggish, there was still enough fun in the premise and in the characters (especially Tyler Labine's Sock and Ray Wise's devil, wondering ... read more

The New Season: Busy Enough for You?

Masi Oka and David Anders in Heroes by Paul Drinkwater/NBC Photo

Already playing catch-up on only the second day of the official TV season. Geez, how will we ever survive Wednesdays and Thursdays? (Pause here for a silent prayer to the powers that protect my DVRs.)Anyway, the biggest news on Monday was how Heroes would bounce back from a first-season finale that disappointed many (I was not among them, but then, my expectations for this uneven show haven’t always been all that high). I was mostly enthralled, once I got over yet another tedious Mohinder speech to kick off the season with more blah-blah about destiny and the plague that threatens to eradicate these evolutionary wonder-heroes as “the fate of humanity itself hangs in the balance.” Seriously, they talk that way all the time on Heroes, and don’t I wish Mohinder would just put a sock in it.But then the story kicks in, and by the end, I’m even in awe of Mohinder, who’s in league with Noah Bennet (formerly HRG) to infiltrate The Company and bring them down. O... read more
