Rachel Ashley (Olivia De Havilland) is the widow of a wealthy Cornish man who has died under mysterious circumstances. The dead man's cousin, Philip Ashley (Richard Burton), arrives to investigate his relative's untimely parting and quickly begins to suspect the widow. What complicates matters is the fact that he seems to be falling in love with her.
