Cheers & Jeers: Terrence Howard Lays Down the Law

Terrence Howard

Cheers to Terrence Howard for his passionate performance on Law & Order: Los Angeles.

As suave Deputy DA Jonah Dekker, the Oscar-nominated actor (Hustle & Flow) may be the most purely charismatic cast member on any L&O show since Chris Noth. And when he butts heads with Peter Coyote's more politically minded DA, it's a battle of seductively gravelly voices to rival Alec Baldwin and Will Arnett's verbal smackdowns on 30 Rock... read more

VIDEO: Exclusive First Look at Peter Coyote on Law & Order: Los Angeles

Peter Coyote

Following in the footsteps of former senator Fred Thompson and Sam Waterston, Peter Coyote steps into the lead district attorney role when Law & Order: Los Angeles premieres Wednesday. According to the 68-year-old character actor, it did not take much to convince him to join the show. "When [series creator] Dick Wolf called me to do this, he just ran down the cast list," Coyote says. "I said yes; I mean how can you turn this crew down?"

May 6, 2007: Grapes of Wrath

The wine tasting at Tommy and Holly’s new vineyard put Tommy at the center of tonight’s episode. The "center" of course being a place Tommy isn’t normally accustomed to being. He handled everything well, and he definitely came across as the voice of reason among the extended Walker family. Not that that was hard to do, what with the Walker siblings missing the point of the wine tasting and doing a fair amount of wine drinking. But Tommy’s toast was a nice tribute to his dad, managing to be both honest about his father's flaws and respectful of all he taught them. Unfortunately the episode didn’t end on a good note for Tommy. Hopefully the twins will be OK.Holly, on the other hand, didn’t exactly play the gracious host to the Walker family. In the beginning of the episode I actually felt sort of bad for her, which is unusual because Holly’s generally not the sort of character who generates a lot of sympathy. I don’t think Nora was really under ... read more

Brothers' Mother Is Hot for Teacher

Curious where Brothers & Sisters' Nora's reborn interest in writing and art is going? (C'mon, be nice. At least, I dunno, seven of you are.) Would you believe... the boudoir? Later this season, Peter Coyote (Erin Brockovich, E.T.) will appear on several episodes of ABC's hit freshman serial as Mark August, a professor and potential romantic interest for the widow Walker. I foresee fisticuffs with Dr. Andy Brown. read more

The 4400: Who's Out, In and Returning!

Billy Campbell (Jordan) and Joel Gretsch (Tom), The 4400

Buckle up, fans of USA Network's The 4400, because the twists and turns are about to come at you a good 4,400 miles per hour. The two-hour Season 3 premiere (Sunday at 9 pm/ET) alone uncorks some shockers that promise to change the pace and direction of the show forever, as well as to bid farewell to a familiar face or two. All of which raises the question: Will this be the wildest 4400 season yet?

"We certainly hope so," executive producer Maira Suro tells TVGuide.com, pointing out that that is precisely the message being communicated by the show's massive ad campaign. "Creatively, we're still putting out the best show we know how to do, but we hope to get a lot of new viewers. At the same time, we've got great surprises and more of the exciting pace that has made us the show that we are."

Indeed, serial shockers read more

Commander in Chief Because apparently...

Commander in ChiefBecause apparently nothing ever goes smoothly for Mackenzie Allen, this week the ruler of the free world has to contend with a tell-all book filled to the brim with juicy, might-topple-the-Administration secrets. Uh-oh, kids, looks like we've got us a mole in the White House. (I guess it's hoping for too much to wish Tobias Fünke would attack a mini-replica of Washington dressed up in a big mole suit here, huh? That'll teach me to watch a TiVo'd Arrested Development right before I tune in to LadyPrez & Co. Seriously, though, I'll bet Bob Loblaw could help take care of this little snitch problem tout de suite.)  Meanwhile, Mac's choice for VP finally gets his day before Congress in a potentially disastrous confirmation hearing. ...are sick. All of them are developing...

...are sick. All of them are developing rashes that make Bill O'Reilly's splotches look like freckles. (Maybe O'Reilly is a 4400 gifted with superhuman pig-ignorance. That would explain a lot. I'll have to keep tabs on the "No-Spin Zone" to see if he scratches excessively. If not, he could change the name to the "No-Scratch Zone.") The rash is an itchy side effect of a plague that inhibits the 4400's metahuman gifts — an ailment that, no surprise, was developed by NTAC. Shawn has lost his power to heal; Maia has pneumonia and can't see into the future; and Alana thinks she's in the imaginary reality she created for Tom. The return of Dennis Ryland (Peter Coyote) was a wee too timely, though dramatically quite welcome all the same. It's nice to see Coyote do more than History Channel voiceovers, because the former '60s guerilla mime makes a darn good amoral bureaucrat. Create an illness, issue a quarantine — it's so simple, it's brilliant. It's not like the American people read more

Some thoughts from a typically...

Some thoughts from a typically busy summer Sunday of TV:

Six Feet Under
Truer words were never spoken than Ruth Fisher's weary, teary whine to her steadfast companion in the finale of Six Feet Under Sunday night: "This is Hell, George. Hell. I just want it to end."

So, my dear, did I. And thankfully, at last, Six Feet Under — an occasionally brilliant, nearly always maddening and, lately, just plain miserable series about living in the shadow of death — is behind us. In a nice twist, the show's final scenes actually seemed to embrace the possibilities of life — before the climactic montage of all the major characters meeting their eventual makers as Claire, bless her heart, drove off into the future. I couldn't imagine the show ending any other way than in a series of obituary cards, and I was amused that so many of the characters (especially Brenda) passed away looking as if they read more

Has The Inside been canceled? ...

Question: Has The Inside been canceled? If it has, then I give up. What is the point of anyone investing their time in a new TV series if it's only going to get canceled after a few weeks? This seems to be a growing trend, and a trend that is causing me to rethink the concept of watching any new shows. The Inside had a legitimate shot at becoming a hit if it were given time. What is the hurry in canceling any show? It is not like they're going to replace it with anything other than reruns of long-in-the-tooth shows such as Malcolm in the Middle. After all, Fox has given that Ron Howard show (Arrested Development) so much opportunity to succeed, and yeah, it's critically acclaimed, but that show couldn't draw flies if it were shown at a garbage dump. Isn't this going to be the third year for Arrested Development? Everybody Loves Raymond and Seinfeld weren't hits when they started, but over time they developed a huge audience. Shows are being canceled too quickly. Answer: Except, ... read more
