Peter Bogdanovich Fast Facts:
  • His mother was pregnant with him when she and his father fled the Nazi occupation; he was born in the United States.
  • Worked as a film critic in his early professional years, which brought him into contact with such iconic directors as Orson Welles and Alfred Hitchcock. 
  • Was only 32 when he directed his moody masterpiece, 1971's The Last Picture Show, which was eventually named a culturally significant film by the National Film Registry.
  • He quickly followed that with 1973's Paper Moon. The enduring comedy featured 10-year-old Tatum O'Neal, who would go on to win the best supporting actor Oscar for her role.
  • Was a founding member of the Directors Company, a production company whose members included Francis Ford Coppola and William Friedkin, and through which he produced Paper Moon. 
  • Honored by the International Federation of Film Archives for his film-preservation efforts.
