As exciting game-changers go, the only shows currently surpassing The CW's The Vampire Diaries in their new seasons are Showtime's Sunday blockbusters, the Emmy-winning Homeland (which just won't stop with the jaw-dropping twists) and the back-on-its-game Dexter (finally breaking new ground with Deb's realization of her brother's true identity). After several seasons of treading bloody water with increasingly convoluted plotting that didn't really move the show's core characters forward, Diaries has at last taken the leap in its fourth season (Thursday at 8/7c), turning its leading lady (Nina Dobrev as the tormented Elena) into the most reluctant of vampires, sending shock waves of guilt, anger and worry through the entire Mystic Falls supernatural brain trust.

Now that The Vampire Diaries' Elena Gilbert is becoming a vampire, how will it change the course of her life and will it alter the big decision she made in choosing Stefan over Damon in last season's finale?
"Without a doubt the triangle has been refreshed and reset with the actions of Elena going over that bridge and becoming a vampire," executive producer Julie Plec tells TVGuide.com about the series' fourth season, which kicks of Thursday (8/7c, The CW).
The Vampire Diaries' Damon Salvatore showed a bit of his emotional side last season, but the wry, angst-ridden vampire we fell in love with early on is back in full force when the series returns.
"The guy tried everything," Ian Somerhalder told TVGuide.com. "He tried to be the romantic, he tried to be the big brother, but no one listened to him and it all went to sh--. He's now saying, 'You know what? I tried, it didn't work, screw you. This is who I am and this is what I do."

"I'm human — at least I was."
These are Elena Gilbert's fateful words in the brand-new cold open for The Vampire Diaries.

Mystic Falls fans, you're gonna want to see this.
When The Vampire Diaries' third season hits DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, Sept. 11, we're getting some juicy insights into why Stefan went so dark last year. In one of the extras, entitled "Stefan's Descent into Darkness," both executive producer Julie Plec and star Paul Wesley discuss taking the character from Elena's lovey-dovey, plasma-denying beau to cold-blooded S.O.B. And it turns out, the idea to jerkify the guy was Wesley's! Sort of.

Gabby Douglas has made no secret of the fact that she's a huge Vampire Diaries fan — and apparently the feeling is mutual.
On Monday, cast members from the show, including Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder, posted a video on YouTube congratulating Douglas and wishing her luck in Tuesday's balance beam final.
Now that The Vampire Diaries' Elena Gilbert is turning into a vampire, there's one question on everyone's mind: How long will it be before she has some hot, vampy sex?
The short answer: You may have to wait a while. "I'm not going to say she's not having loads of vampire sex off camera that we're not showing, but we have not yet shot a complete sexual act this season between Elena and anybody," executive producer Julie Plec tells TVGuide.com.
