Paul Verhoeven Fast Facts:

His Turkish Delight was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 1973, and his World War II drama Soldier of Orange was nominated for the same honor at the 1980 Golden Globes.
Was an officer in the Royal Dutch Navy film corps in the 1960s, creating such documentaries as 1965's Het Korps Mariniers (The Royal Dutch Marine Corps.)
Made his English-language debut with the 1985 medieval drama Flesh + Blood, starring fellow Dutchman Rutger Hauer.
Surprised organizers of the Golden Raspberry Awards by showing up to accept the Worst Director honor for his 1995 critical and commercial bomb Showgirls.
In 2010, his scholarly book, Jesus of Nazareth, was published in English. Asked at the time why he chose to write a book portraying Jesus as a human being bound by the natural world, Verhoeven replied, "you mean...I'm supposed to be spending all my time making another version of Total Recall?"
