'Corpsicle'

Chuck gives Oscar (Paul Reubens) a piece of her hair so he can find out the truth about her smell. Emerson tells Ned he has a daughter but later blames carbon monoxide poisoning as the culprit for his sharing mood (but we know the potato was inserted in the tailpipe after he shared that information). High as a kite from a mood enhancer, Lily tells Olive Chuck’s her daughter. Oh my! All sorts of secrets came out of hiding tonight. On the run from Ned after he told her he’s responsible for the death of her father, Chuck goes to the only other place she knows she’s welcome: Olive’s. And because it’s the last place he thinks to look, Ned scours the city before knocking on Olive’s door. But now that she and Chuck are friends, Olive’s not about to give her up. I was happy Chuck got to tell someone the real story of how she died and was resurrected by Ned, even if Olive ending up not believing her. I may have mentioned it before but I’ll mention it ag... read more

"Smell of Success"

Tonight we finally learned why Ned decided to become a pie maker and how he became so set in his ways. The smell of pies reminded 9 year-old Ned of his mother and feeling safe, loved, and warm. He knows he can’t eat the pies but he derives pleasure from making them nonetheless. Years later when Chuck buys cupcake pans and suggests offering cup-pies on the menu, we get a glimpse of how averse Ned is to change. Can you really blame him? I can’t even imagine the trauma of having a bearskin rug come alive beneath me.I really enjoyed Chuck enlisting Olive in her scheme to get the Darling Mermaid Darlings (DMD) back in the water. Hard nut Lily really likes torturing Olive and I like seeing just how far her invective will go. Olive does her best to put Phase 2 in motion but Lily passes her fleeting smile off as gas. Our mystery death of the week involves apprentice Anita Gray. She works for olfactory genius Napoleon LeNez (Chistopher Sieber), who is publishing a book on smell. Wh... read more

Giving Thanks for TV

The past few weeks have been trying ones for anyone who cares about TV and the potentially devastating impact the ongoing writers’ strike could have on the current season and beyond. Which is why, being a cockeyed optimist and all, I’ve been cautiously thanking the fates ever since hearing that the Writers’ Guild and the producers’ alliance are going back to the negotiating table on Monday. No guarantee, of course, that this will mean a quick end to the standoff that has shut so much production down already. But hey, it’s Thanksgiving week, so let’s stay in a thankful and hopeful mode, OK?In that light, here are 10 more reasons to be thankful about the current week in TV as we head into the Thanksgiving break.1. We’re still in a sweeps month, which has allowed us most nights to live blissfully in denial that a strike is even happening, since new episodes continue to abound (including over most of this long holiday weekend). Depending on what happen... read more

I saw an advanced screener of ...

Question: I saw an advanced screener of Pushing Daisies, and you were right: The show is amazing! Any scoop on how the rest of the season will play out?

Answer: You may've heard that producers were hoping to borrow Masi Oka for a guest stint, but NBC put the kibosh on it at the 11th hour. The show won't be hurting for guest stars, though, since sources tell me exclusively that Pee-wee Herman himself, Paul Reubens, has inked a deal to play the potentially recurring role of Alfredo Aldarisio, a traveling homeopathic antidepressant representative/salesman. All together now: mekka lekka hi, mekka hiney hooray!

February 1, 2007: "It Feels Good to Laugh"

Before we get started with this weeks 30 Rock debrief a moment of silence please for the just-passed Prince Gerhardt one of sitcomdoms hardest to look at most unsettling and thus and alas funniest creations [Silence]Yes Paul Pee-wee Reubens served up a memorable majesty on a very strong very laugh-out-loud funny installment of the Rock Still I cannot help but fear that his character may have offended anyone out there who employs a prosthetic baby hand and suffers from a malady that prohibits the production of joint fluid as well as the metabolization of grapes NBC may get lettersAlso big props to Reubens fellow guest stars Isabella Rossellini really letting loose as Bianca Jacks now-tortured ex and SNLs Will Forte as the princes stewardWhat really impressed me as a aspiring comedy writer was how 30 Rock deftly handled Lemons date with Jack Lesser shows would have gone there in that final scene and really jacked up the tension between its two read more
