Question: I love Brothers & Sisters but cannot stand Holly. I mean, how realistic is it for Nora to invite her late husband's mistress to her daughter's engagement and birthday parties? What annoys me the most about her is that she has no remorse for her actions and basically demands that the Walkers be nice to her. Also, it feels like the writers are making Sarah look like the bad guy sometimes, to make Holly look more sympathetic. In my opinion, the show should write out Holly. What is her purpose, anyway? She has no real storyline.
Answer: She is the odd person out in this series, isn't she? And that's no fault of Patricia Wettig, a fave of mine since her triumph on thirtysomething. What the show needs to do is give Holly more of a purpose — a romantic interest outside the Walker family, maybe? — because the character isn't going anywhere (and not just because Wettig is married to Ken Olin, one of the executive producers). The Brothers & Sisters ensemble (sans the actors who play Nora, Robert, Kitty and Sarah) recently walked a red carpet outside the San Antonio Winery (where the show has filmed on occasion) in downtown Los Angeles to celebrate the release of the prime-time serial drama's Season 1 DVD release. TVGuide.com was on the scene to get the scoop on that as well as Season 2, which debuts on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 10 pm/ET, on ABC.
Arguably, the biggest shock twist at the end of the show's freshman year was Uncle Saul possibly being gay. (Those longing looks with guest star Michael Nouri sure implied it, didn't they?) The wine tasting at Tommy and Holly’s new vineyard put Tommy at the center of tonight’s episode. The "center" of course being a place Tommy isn’t normally accustomed to being. He handled everything well, and he definitely came across as the voice of reason among the extended Walker family. Not that that was hard to do, what with the Walker siblings missing the point of the wine tasting and doing a fair amount of wine drinking. But Tommy’s toast was a nice tribute to his dad, managing to be both honest about his father's flaws and respectful of all he taught them. Unfortunately the episode didn’t end on a good note for Tommy. Hopefully the twins will be OK.Holly, on the other hand, didn’t exactly play the gracious host to the Walker family. In the beginning of the episode I actually felt sort of bad for her, which is unusual because Holly’s generally not the sort of character who generates a lot of sympathy. There are moments in this week's episode where everything I think Brothers & Sisters [Sundays at 10 pm/ET, on ABC] should come together perfectly; comedy and tragedy coexist — just like they do in real life, turning, dancing with each other in perpetuity. The episode has it all — male passions run amok, female passions threaten to cause thermonuclear war, farce, drunkenness, sorrow and laughter. In my humble opinion, a great episode. There are moments of acting in "Grapes of Wrath" that took my breath away when I saw it. One in particular stands out. I don't want to say too much, but it takes place in a kitchen during a showdown between Nora and Holly. Both actresses, Sally Field and Patty Wettig are real and funny and frightening in a way that brings to mind some of the great turns that John Cassavetes managed to capture on film — I'm thinking of Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence in particular. Question: I just watched Brothers & Sisters for the first time and it seemed very familiar to me. Then I realized that part of what I was responding to was that both Sally Field and Patricia Wettig, while still beautiful, looked like "real" women I could actually know in real life. I was struck by the emotion they were able to convey because they don't seem to have had any work done, which can freeze the face. Is this the beginning of a trend or just a quirk? Have others noticed it? Have executives discussed it and held focus groups about it? British television often lets people age gracefully, but we don't seem to trust that the American public will look at an older face.
Answer: I'd love this to be a trend, but it's probably more of an anomaly, given TV's general fixation on youth and most of Hollywood's refusal to age with grace. One of the best of many good things to say about Brothers & Sisters is how remarkable it is to see actresses with the chops of Sally Field and Patricia

So much happened last night that it could have taken weeks for a typical family to sort out every event. Thank goodness the Walkers don’t keep secrets. All it took was one four-way conversation for everyone to know that Kitty slept with the senator, Kevin slept with Scotty, Justin slept with Tyler, and Nora spent the night in jail.Kitty and the senator were the big story, obviously. Once we found out that a business trip had them spending Valentine’s Day together, it became apparent that something would happen between them. Things started off romantically, but there's so much potential for complication. It seems fairly certain that issues will come up at work and/or with their families. On a side note, I did like the senator’s comment that he “always had a thing for Demi Moore,” Rob Lowe and Demi Moore of course both being members of the Brat Pack. TVGuide.com just last week broke the news that later this season Patricia Wettig will take a break from playing mistress-with-the-mostess Holly Harper on ABC's Brothers & Sisters (Sundays at 10 pm/ET) in order to reprise her role as Prison Break's Caroline Reynolds, aka Madame President of the United States. Nora may be good at many things, but it doesn’t look like working at the family business is one of them. It was strange to see her floundering around the office like a fish out of water, especially when Nora always seems so in control at home. I kept expecting some of her self-confidence to eventually show itself in the workplace. How surprising was it to see some great ideas come from Holly instead?Although Holly’s ideas may have been good, it seems like she could learn to be a little more tactful. Making reference to her closeness to William during a meeting where half the attendees were Walker family members seemed in poor taste, to say the least. At least Holly realized that, but I couldn’t tell if she was genuinely sorry for bringing it up — as she told Nora. I find Holly a little hard to read in general.
