Ask Matt: Season's Surprises (Good and Bad), Olympics, Superheroes

Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher

Question: Now that the "traditional" network season is about half over, do you have any shows you've found to be either pleasant surprises (those you didn't think much of initially, but improved) or disappointments? I know that for me, the biggest disappointment has been (as it has been for many people) Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is basically just the 21st-century A-Team. It's fairly entertaining enough, but if it were to disappear tomorrow, I wouldn't shed any tears. The two happiest surprises for me have been The Crazy Ones (which didn't sound like it would be good, and I quit watching after the pilot but have caught up and found it quite enjoyable — probably because they keep Robin Williams' zaniness in check and the supporting cast has proven very funny) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. I didn't really know much of Andy Samberg so wasn't that interested, but the early reviews had me check it out. I was very glad, too, because that's one new show I look forward to every week. I find it to be a worthy successor to The Office in its heyday. I'm also finding Almost Human to be getting much better from its middling premiere, though it's still not quite appointment TV. — Scott

The Mentalist: Jane Gets His Groove Back

Simon Baker, Robin Tunney

Meet the new Jane, same as the old Jane?

It's been three months that Patrick Jane's (Simon Baker) been in (isolated) detention on The Mentalist — during which time he apparently couldn't find a decent razor — and Abbott (Rockmond Dunbar) and Fisher (Emily Swallow) are growing impatient, champing at the bit to have Jane join their ranks at the FBI. But there's only one problem: he won't work for them unless all his demands are met, and Lisbon (Robin Tunney) is the final holdout. Fisher takes a trip to Washington to personally recruit Lisbon, who's getting increasingly frustrated with the office politics at her desk job, and convinces her to at least hear Jane out.

The Mentalist's Simon Baker on Ending the Red John Arc: "There's a Level of Disappointment"

Simon Baker

Patrick Jane isn't the only person who's eager to bring his decade-long hunt for Red John to a close on The MentalistSimon Baker says the conclusion of the story line, after Sunday's final showdown, is a relief for him as well.

"This last five, six months that we've been working on the show, it's been really exciting for me," Baker said on a conference call this week. "It's felt like I've had the sort of enthusiasm that I had in the first season because it's new and fresh from week to week and it's going somewhere. Sometimes the frustration for me as an actor is that we're not going anywhere, not moving forward. In this, we're definitely going somewhere, and the stakes are high and it gives me something to do that I can really get my teeth into."
