Tuesday TV in Review: A Thrill Ride Down ABC's River, Justified, Southland

If the notion of getting "Lost in the Amazon" and finding yourself in a weekly horror movie has any appeal, then by all means set your compass for ABC's The River, the most exciting thing to happen to TV's midseason since, well, Monday's premiere of Smash on NBC. If Smash is a show-stopper, The River is a terrifying heart-stopper, a cleverly cinematic supernatural adventure that takes us on a wild ride into an exotic heart of darkness. (It opens with back-to-back episodes Tuesday at 9/8c, and the second hour is even scarier than the first.)

Matt's TV Week in Review

On that rare occasion when someone tells you there's nothing good on TV — but honestly, why would you be talking to people like that? — gently point them toward Tuesday nights at 10/9c, a time period that became ridiculously overstuffed this week thanks to some of cable's best and most entertaining dramas. (And let's pause to give thanks to cable replays, for those with limited DVR capability.)

THE TUESDAY LOGJAM: Let's start with FX's Justified, fresh as ever in its third season. Still recovering from last season's wounds, wry U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) may not be up to snuff just yet — as his boss taunts, "You can't run and you can't shoot, what good are you?" — but the show is so assured in its blend of barbed humor and deadly menace that you can always expect at least once per episode to be found laughing on the edge of your seat. Mags Bennett may be gone, and there's no replacing the great Margo Martindale, but icy-eyed Neal McDonough is giving it a robust go...read more

Justified: 6 Reasons Why We're Pumped for Season 3

Let's raise a glass of "apple pie" moonshine in honor of the dearly departed Justified villain Mags Bennett. Margo Martindale's Emmy-winning portrayal was a huge part of what made the Southern-fried FX drama's second season such a thrilling ride and will no doubt be a tough act to follow. And executive producer Graham Yost knows it.

Mega Buzz: One Tree Hill's Goodbye, a New Five-0 Villain and Housewives' Murder

Every week, editors Adam Bryant and Natalie Abrams satisfy your need for TV scoop. Please send all questions to mega_scoop@tvguide.com.

Are any of my beloved characters going to die in the final season of One Tree Hill? — Danica
ADAM:
I would say it's a distinct possibility (but look closely, that's not a body Haley is looking at in this promo). Rob Buckley's thoughts on the matter also seem pretty grim. "The One Tree Hill family as we know it is going to change by season's end," he teases. "The people we start the season with [are] not the same group we end it with."

Let's start 2012 with some Hawaii Five-0 spoilers? — James

Exclusive Sneak Peek: Superman/Batman Apocalypse

Apocalypse is coming. On Tuesday. Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, the latest DVD movie in Warner Home Video's series of adaptations of classic DC Comics stories, comes out Sept. 28 (in single disc DVD, two-disc special edition Blu-Ray, digital download and on demand). Based on a 2004 story written by former Heroes writer Jeph Loeb, Apocalypse features the arrival of Superman's lost cousin Kara from Krypton. Summer Glau plays the future Supergirl, while Kevin Conroy and Tim Daly reprise the roles they have perfected in multiple animated incarnations of the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel, respectively. Susan Eisenberg also returns to the DC animated universe as Wonder Woman, a part she played on the late, great Justice League series. Andre Braugher plays the evil despot Darkseid and Ed Asner his lieutenant, Granny Goodness. (Added bonus in the special edition set: a Green Arrow short with Neal McDonagh in the title role.) Check out an exclusive clip after the jump.

Cheers & Jeers: Scoundrels' Sweet David James

Jeers to Scoundrels for not living up to its title.

ABC's summer crime dramedy (at least I think it's trying to be funny) suffered a huge loss when Neal McDonough was reportedly sacked after three days of production because the devout Catholic refused to shoot sex scenes with costar Virginia Madsen. McDonough brings a riveting malevolence to every role he plays, from sleazy DA David McNorris on Boomtown to psycho killer Dave Williams on Desperate Housewives. He surely would've lived up to the name of Palm Springs crime family patriarch Wolfgang "Wolf" West.

Here's the real crime: McDonough was replaced by David James Elliott, a likably generic TV hunk best known for his role as straight-arrow military man Harmon "Harm" Rabb on JAG. But on Scoundrels, Elliott seems... read more
