Morgan Freeman Passenger Sues, Says She Isn't "Other Woman" | Today's News: Our Take | 2/25/2009

The passenger in Morgan Freeman's car crash last year sued the actor Wednesday for negligence and disputed media portrayals of her as the "other woman" in the breakup of his marriage.

Former executive assistant Demaris Meyer's lawsuit claims that Freeman failed to properly operate the car, and she is seeking damages to cover medical expenses and permanent disability, among other things, according to Reuters.

Meyer said she met the Oscar winner for the first time on the night of the crash, Aug. 3, by dining with him, a mutual friend and the friend's wife. She said the Dark Knight and Driving Miss Daisy star offered to let her stay at his Charleston, Miss., estate because she had to go to work in the morning and it would make her commute more convenient.

Morgan Freeman has left a Memphis hospital following a Sunday-night car crash.The office of Freeman’s publicist, Ken Sunshine, confirmed to TVGuide.com that the actor was released around noon Thursday.Freeman had surgery late Monday. He suffered a broken arm and elbow, as well as minor shoulder damage. Freeman, 71, and his passenger, Demaris Meyer, were traveling eastbound on Highway 32, in Mississippi’s Tallahatchie County, when the actor's Nissan Maxima veered off the road. As Freeman overcorrected, the vehicle flipped several times before coming to a rest. Police say that is no indication that either alcohol or drugs were involved.The actor’s attorney disclosed this week that Freeman and Myrna Colley-Lee, his wife of 24 years, were divorcing. Morgan Freeman and his wife of the past 24 years, costumer Myrna Colley-Lee, "are involved in a divorce action," the actor's attorney, Bill Luckett, tells Access Hollywood. This news of course comes just days after Freeman and female friend Demaris Meyer were involved in a late-night car accident on Mississippi Highway 32.Freeman's attorney goes on to note that "for legal and practical purposes, [Freeman and his wife] have been separated since December of 2007." When contacted by TVGuide.com, Freeman's publicist, Donna Lee, said she was unable to confirm or deny the report. Morgan Freeman is recovering from the injuries suffered in a car accident Sunday and looks forward to going home from the hospital soon, his publicist said Tuesday.The Academy Award-winning actor was still listed in serious condition Tuesday, said Kathy Stringer, a spokeswoman for the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.
