  • Moved with her family to the United States from Yugoslavia in 1986; she enrolled in the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida.
  • Won her first pro singles title in 1989 by defeating Chris Evert in the final of a tournament in Houston.
  • Became, in 1990, the youngest woman to win the French Open, at 16.
  • Perfected two-handed grip on the racket, which was later emulated by many women players.
  • Ranked the No. 1 professional woman's tennis player in the world in 1991 and 1992.
  • Was stabbed in the back in April 1993 during a match in Germany by a mentally ill man who claimed to be a fan of Steffi Graf. Seles was out of tennis for more than two years as a result of the attack.
