Fall 2007: Superman Will Protect and Serve

Today's pilot-casting quickies, per the Reporter:• Dean Cain will play a veteran officer in Protect and Serve, a CBS drama from Las Vegas creator Gary Scott Thompson. Also added to the cast are Eric Balfour (24), Tamala Jones and Monica Potter.• Paige Turco (who never thanked me for the roses I sent her some 16 years ago... ) and Jessica Collins (Tru Calling edition) have come on board ABC's drama about four high-powered CEOs/CEO wannabes (played by Dylan McDermott, Michael Vartan, Joshua Malina and Christopher Titus).• Raquel Welch is a bombshell former TV star on CBS' The Captain.• Following a disappointing Monday table read, production has been pushed back on 24 cocreator Bob Cochran's NSA Innocent, as the lead character is being tweaked and portrayer Stephen Moyer will be recast. read more

You are the most hypocritical ...

Question: You are the most hypocritical so-called television critic I have ever read. Your recent remark about Boston Legal straining for cheap shock effect is totally laughable when you practically worship shows that are completely built on cheap shock effect, like Nip/Tuck and Desperate Housewives. If you took the cheap shock effect out of those two shows, you would be left with about 10 minutes of show each week. Is Boston Legal over the top? Of course, but it is not meant to be a serious legal drama that shows us the inner workings of the American judicial system. It is a farcical show about a group of zany lawyers, but for some reason it isn't allowed the leeway and suspension of disbelief you seem to afford all of the completely unrealistic and over-the-top shows that you rave about on a weekly basis. Answer: And some people wonder why this column sometimes gets defensive. Perhaps a more charitable word for "hypocritical" would be "inconsistent," which at least makes sense given ... read more

I just watched the season ...

Question: I just watched the season premiere of Boston Legal and I am totally confused. Why didn't they just let the final episodes from last season go untouched and then introduce the new characters later? Instead we have characters (Julie Bowen's, most notably) about whom we have no clue, yet somehow we're supposed to care what happens to them. I was already mad at David Kelley for canning Rhona Mitra, but this steps it up a few notches. And what's with the excessive commercial breaks on ABC this year? Answer: Why single out ABC for the high commercial load? They're all doing it. As for Boston Legal, at least Rhona Mitra was so integral to the Rupert Everett story line that she's visible in these episodes. I saw the first two hours in advance, and there was one group scene where you can see Monica Potter (whose absence will not be missed), but otherwise, it's as if that character just vanished. And besides, the lovely Mitra has traded up by moving to Nip/Tuck, my No.1 choice for tha ... read more

Boston Legal Star's Expecting

When you're on a David E. Kelley show, you get used to facing unexpected twists. But Boston Legal's Monica Potter wasn't ready for this one: Just a few months into her deft portrayal of quick-thinking attorney Lori Colson on ABC's Practice spin-off (Sundays, 10 pm/ET), she got a big surprise — she's pregnant.

"There's no hiding it [now]," Potter, 33, tells TVGuide.com. "My gut's getting big... I could pass it off as beer and say that I've been out late [a lot], but I can't blame it on that."

Well, actually, the credit really belongs to her fiancé, Chris, an orthopedic surgeon she met after friends of hers encountered the M.D. in a Los Angeles hospital and decided he was too good not to fix up.

"They invited him to a party," explains the Ohio native, "and when he walked in, I liked him right away. He sat down and we were talking, and a few minutes later we wer read more
