Jena Irene and Caleb Johnson
American Idol has named its lucky Season 13 winner.
On Wednesday's two-hour finale of the Fox reality singing competition, the finalists had the opportunity to sing with some of their biggest idols in a star-studded extravaganza. Who found their musical soul mates? And more importantly, was Wild Card pick Jena or rocker Caleb crowned the winner? Read on for our breakdown of the night's performances or skip to the bottom for the results.
Before the live shows even began on American Idol, MK Nobilette had already made headlines for being the show's first openly gay contestant to make it past the early rounds.
"I'm very obviously gay," Nobilette told judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick, Jr., shortly before she was ushered into the Top 30. And with those words, the frequent "are-they-or-aren't-they" aura that has pervaded Idol for 13 seasons, from Clay Aiken to Adam Lambert, was... if not shattered, at least dented a little.
On Thursday's American Idol results show, the Top 10 became nine, but more importantly, judge Jennifer Lopez took off her judge's hat (and other things) to perform her new single, "I Luh Ya Papi."
It was all Top 10 all the time on Wednesday's American Idol, with the 10 finalists performing Top 10 songs from 2011 or later (a.k.a. songs that will make viewers of a certain age feel very old if they are unfamiliar with them).
Throughout the course of the evening, selfies were taken, judges Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban did amazing impersonations of each other, and Malaya got her first bouquet of flowers (aww) from Ryan Seacrest and the Idol crew. But let's get to the performances:
"Tonight's outcome may surprise a few people," Ryan Seacrest promised at the beginning of Thursday's American Idol elimination episode. Who made it to the Top 10 after singing "Music From the Movies"?
American Idol XIII
American Idol headed to Tinseltown in Week 3, with the Top 11 choosing their favorite songs from movie soundtracks to perform.
This week is important because only the Top 10 finalists will be included on the Idol summer tour, meaning that whoever gets eliminated Thursday will be left in the dust. Before the singing starts, however...
After a night of singing about "Home," one American Idol hopeful headed home Thursday night.
American Idol XIII Top 12
It's Week 2 of eliminations on Season 13 of American Idol, and the theme is "Home" — which, frankly, leaves the Top 12 a pretty wide range of songs to pick from, as long as their choice reminds them of some aspect of their town. Also, the pitch problems resulting from the new inner ear speakers thankfully seem to have been resolved this week. So, which song did each of the finalists choose to remind them of home? Let's get right into the performances:
Let me just start by saying that of the American Idol-watching editors at TVGuide.com, I'm the MK Nobilette fan. Therefore, it pains me to say that she wasn't very good in her first live performance as a finalist.
The lucky 13 are now only 12 on American Idol. The reality singing competition sent home its first finalist Thursday after a relatively lackluster performance night.
