Nick Offerman on His The Simpsons Guest Stint, and Why It's Hard to Say Goodbye to Parks and Recreation

Ron Swanson, the gruff character Nick Offerman plays on Parks and Recreation, would admire the actor's work ethic. Dads Producers on Backlash to the "Offensive" Pilot: "We're Used to It"

If there's one new fall show that everyone seems to have an opinion about, it's Dads, the new Fox comedy from the production team behind Family Guy. Based on the pilot episode alone, the show has been derided as "racist," "offensive" and "morally wrong" by critics. But Fox is using the backlash as a selling point — using such comments in promos for the show to try to foster tension between fans and (in the network's telling) and out-of-touch critics. And the show's producers — Seth MacFarlaneWellesley Wild and Alec Sulkin of Family Guy, along with former Simpsons showrunner Mike Scully — don't seem to mind the negative attention either.

"We're used to it. That's what we do," Wild tells TVGuide.com.

Asian-American Group Asks Fox's Dads to Reshoot "Racist" Scenes

Fox has been asked to reshoot "racist" scenes in its new comedy Dads by the Media Action Network for Asian-Americans, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

"Our community can't continue to be the target of racially insensitive jokes," MANAA founding president Guy Aoki wrote in a letter to network executives. "Fox has an opportunity to fix fatal flaws in the pilot and to improve the show's chances for success when it premieres next month. We are asking you to reshoot the inappropriate scenes of the pilot. read more

Mad Men, Modern Family Win at Writers Guild Awards

Mad Men won the Writers Guild award for best dramatic TV series, and Modern Family for best TV comedy series.

Mad Men also took the prize for dramatic episode ("The Chrysanthemum and the Sword") while 30 Rock took best TV comedy episode honors ("When It Rains, It Pours") at the 2011 Writers Guild of America awards, held Saturday night in New York and Los Angeles.

According to the Reporter, Fox is developing three new dysfunctional-family-based animated series for the 2008-09 season: The Pitts, based on a short-lived live-action comedy and from The Simpsons' Mike Scully; Relative Insanity, exec-produced by Jack Black; and Mothballs, from the creators of Drawn Together.... Per Variety, Greg Malins (Friends) has a pilot commitment from ABC for The 16th Minute, a comedy in which five people who have had separate brushes with fame become... friends.... Charles S. The many who went to see Ice Age: The Meltdown this weekend were treated to a 20-second teaser for the long-rumored feature take on The Simpsons. The trailer, which opens on a Superman-like "S" logo — only to reveal it's part of Homer's undershirt tag — and touts a July 27, 2007, release, "is running on 7,000 screens, committing us to opening every place in the world on the same date," exec producer James L. Brooks tells Variety. "Which means, we'd better get started." As for the top-secret story line, Mike Scully, who is penning the film with Simpsons creator Matt Groening, says, "We've taken script security to the point of lunacy, though it helped that we wrote it in Aramaic." read more
