Made his stage debut in 1922 when he was 18-months old, as part of his parents' vaudeville act.
Starred in more than 50 Mickey McGuire comedy shorts. The character was based on a comic strip and Rooney was credited as Mickey McGuire at the time.
Took the last name Rooney from vaudevillian Pat Rooney in 1932.
In 1934, the year he signed with MGM, he made 12 films, including Manhattan Melodrama and Blind Date.
At 19, he became the first teenager nominated for an Oscar, for 1940's Babes in Arms.
Was the No. 1 U.S. box-office star from 1939-41.
Earned four stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
