Why The Leftovers Isn't Lost: We're Not "Hoping to Find Out What Happened," Boss Says

Justin Theroux

Go ahead and compare HBO's new drama The Leftovers to LostJust go on and get it out of you system.

On the surface, the two shows undoubtedly share some DNA. Both were co-created by Damon Lindelof. Both explore the struggle between science and faith. And both feature a large cast of characters trying to move on from a life-altering event. But the thing that sets the two shows apart is crucial: While Lost was derided by many for the answers it provided to the show's once-celebrated head-scratchers, The Leftovers has absolutely zero interest in explaining its central mystery.

Mentalist Boss Bruno Heller Breaks Down the Red John Suspects

Simon Baker, Robin Tunney

It's the beginning of the end for the Red John story line on CBS' The Mentalist. Creator Bruno Heller has promised that the case which has plagued Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) since Season 1 will be solved this year. And based on the Season 6 premiere, Heller and Co. aren't wasting any time in getting to the conclusion.

"We've never really started a season with this kind of situation in which our guys are very, very close to the bad guy, but the bad guy knows exactly as much as they do," Heller tells TVGuide.com. "It's an interesting chess position that they're both in as we start. ... In this first episode, Lisbon is dealing with the fact that Jane for the first time doesn't seem to know what to do next. And that scares the hell out of her."

We asked Heller to make a case for each of the seven suspects. "All of those guys have reasons to hide aspects of their personality," he says. "It's just a question of whether they're hiding for ordinary prosaic reasons or for sinister, evil reasons."

On the Set: Unforgettable's Lively New Spirit

Poppy Montgomery

Much has changed on the Unforgettable set since the drama about NYPD cop Carrie Wells (Poppy Montgomery), who has near perfect memory, was canceled more than a year ago by CBS, then miraculously brought back to life. The action has moved from a grimy Queens precinct to the shiny, high-tech Manhattan Major Crimes Section, and the show's tone has been similarly lightened, in keeping with its off-season scheduling (the first of eight summer episodes aired July 28, with five more new installments to follow later).
