In 1994, the oil-rich city of Karamay in Northwest China was the site of a horrible fire that killed nearly 300 school children. The students were performing for state officials and were told to stand by while the officials exited first. After the fire, the story was heavily censored in the Chinese state media. To this day, the families of Karamay have not been allowed to publicly mourn their children.
In KARAMAY, filmmaker Xu Xin helps a community break the silence nearly two decades after their tragedy. The film is structured around a series of first-person accounts from families, teachers and survivors, interspersed with rare archival footage. Each narrative represents a complete and self-contained story in which the subjects recount their reaction to the carnage and how it colored their view of nation, society, education, law, party institutions and human nature. The result is "a landmark in journalistic diligence and a dedicated act of commemoration and healing" (Michael Fox, SF Weekly).

Caveh Zahedi's Gotham Award winning autobiographical comedy, "I Am a Sex Addict," manages the difficult task of being both genuinely funny and utterly sincere. Zahedi uses re-enactments, documentary footage, and camera address to tell the real life story of his struggle with sex addiction in this dramedy from IFC Films. The indie film opens with documentary footage of a 43-year-old Caveh standing in a church alcove, just before he is about to get married for the third time. Caveh explains to the audience that his past two marriages failed because of his addiction to prostitutes, a problem that he now claims to have overcome. Caveh proceeds to narrate the story of how his addiction started, flashing back to a re-enactment of himself in his mid-twenties, walking down a street in Paris, encountering a prostitute for the first time.
This dramedy from Caveh Zahedi tells how one man's attraction to prostitutes and compulsive honesty destroy his relationships. Gotham Award winner for Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You.
Executive Producer Sean Penn presents "Witch Hunt," a gripping indictment of the American justice system told through the lens of one small town. Voters in Bakersfield, California elected a tough on crime district attorney into office for more than 25 years. During his tenure he convicted dozens of innocent working class moms and dads. They went to prison, some for decades, before being exonerated. He remains in office today. This story mirrors on a micro level what the US has experienced over the last eight years. When power is allowed to exist without oversight, civil rights are in jeopardy.
