Shine A Light movie trailer - starring Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood. Directed by Martin Scorsese. Theatrical Release Date: 4/4/2008
As our country continues to embroil itself in foreign wars and pins its hopes on a new leader's promise for change, Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune is a timely and relevant tribute to an unlikely American hero. Over the course of a meteoric music career that spanned two turbulent decades, Phil Ochs sought the bright lights of fame and social justice in equal measure - a contradiction that eventually tore him apart. From youthful idealism to rage to pessimism, the arch of Ochs' life paralleled that of the times, and the anger, satire and righteous indignation that drove his music also drove him to dark despair. In this brilliantly constructed film, interview and performance footage of Ochs is illuminated by the ruminations of Joan Baez, Tom Hayden, Pete Seeger, Sean Penn, Peter Yarrow, Christopher Hitchens, Ed Sanders, and others.
The abrupt cancellation of this summer's North American arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar is apparently not being forgiven. The Really Useful Group, the London-based production company of Superstar composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, said Tuesday that it was taking legal action against music and theatrical producer Michael Cohl for the 'unilateral decision' to scuttle the tour, which was to star punk legend John 'Johnny Rotten' Lydon and Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child.
Pete Seeger helped introduce America to its own musical heritage, devoting his life to using the power of song as a force for social change. With his deeply-held beliefs, Seeger went from the top of the pop charts to the top of the blacklist and was banned from American commercial television for more than 17 years. This first and only authorized biography of Seeger premiered on PBS in 2008.

As the country continues to engage in foreign wars, PHIL OCHS: THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE is a timely tribute to an unlikely American hero whose music is as relevant today as it was in the 1960s. Ochs, a folk singing legend, was moved by the conviction that he and his music would change the world. He loved his country and fought to honor it, in both song and action. Wielding only a battered guitar, a clear voice and the quiver of his razor sharp songs, he tirelessly fought the good fight for peace and justice throughout his short life. PHIL OCHS: THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE is buoyed by these anthems and melodies from humorous to haunting and throughout the film play the role of narrator, giving contextual depth to the unfolding saga of Ochsí complex political and personal life. In the film, Joan Baez, Tom Hayden, Pete Seeger, Sean Penn, Peter Yarrow, Christopher Hitchens, Ed Sanders, and others who knew or were inspired by Ochs tell stories of political passions that were equal parts idealism, conviction and fantasy mixed together with a big ego and often wild disorganization.
