Mel Gibson will star in Edge of Darkness as a police investigator trying to solve the murder of his daughter.The film is based on a 1985 BBC miniseries. Martin Campbell directed the series and is calling the shots on the movie as well.This is Gibson's first starring role since Signs and We Were Soldiers, both of which were released in 2002. read more

The No Country for Old Men filmmaking team and Scott Rudin are set to translate Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policeman's Union, a contemporary noir murder mystery set in Alaska.... Mel Gibson, meanwhile, is being sued for breach of contract by a Passion of the Christ writer who claims the director misrepresented the film's budget, resulting in lowball remuneration.... Steven Spielberg, meanwhile, is stepping away from controversy, withdrawing from his role as artistic director of the 2008 Olympics in China. He's relinquishing the gig in protest of the Chinese government's policy on Sudan and the Darfur conflict. Those who said Mel Gibson would never eat lunch in Hollywood again were wrong: His Apocalypto debuted at the top of the box office this weekend with a haul of $14.2 million. That said, the self-destructive director may be having that lunch at Burger King rather than Chez Fancypants, seeing as his last hard-sell flick, The Passion of the Christ, took in $83.8 million in its opening weekend. Rounding out the top five were the Cameron Diaz/Jude Law (or Kate Winslet/Jack Black, if you prefer) date movie The Holiday (opening with $13.5 million), then Happy Feet ($12.7 mil), Casino Royale ($8.8 mil) and Leo DiCaprio's Blood Diamond (debuting with $8.5 mil).Monday's Today's News was written by Ben Katner. read more
Poll: Mel Is Still Beloved, Tom Cruise Still Bewilders | Today's News: Our Take | 12/11/2006
Further proof that people are just plain weird: In a new Gallup poll, only 12 percent of respondents said they would go out of their way to see Tom Cruise movies now, while 26 percent said they'd go the extra mile to catch a Mel Gibson flick. Furthermore, 34 percent said they wouldn't see a Cruise pic period, while only 15 percent have sworn off Gibson. Elsewhere on the chart, the far-less-controversial Tom Hanks and Reese Witherspoon were ranked our favorite actor and actress.
