E.G. Marshall and Geraldine Page portray the parents of three sisters: Diane Keaton, Kristin Griffith and Mary Beth Hurt. Marshall is wealthy; Page is mentally disturbed. When Marshall announces that he is leaving Page, she starts to totally disintegrate. Marshall plans to marry Maureen Stapleton. The three daughters rush to their mother's side to see her through her crisis. But the daughters have trials of their own: Keaton has a troubled marriage to a "hack" novelist (Richard Jordan); Hurt has great talent but is destructively unfocused; and Griffith is an overly self-centered television actress. How this family works out its difficulties is the focus of this stylish, brilliantly acted and impressively told story.

The tale begins is a small Pennsylvania town, where Mike Shea (Timothy Hutton) dreams of escaping small town life and moving to California with his girlfriend Brenda (Mare Winningham). But Brenda leaves him with his motor running and Mike takes off alone. On the way, he rescues a woman and her children from an icy river but perishes himself. He finds himself in Heaven, where he is greeted by Aunt Lisa (Maureen Stapleton), who explains the rules and regulations. Once in the ethereal realm, Mike falls in love with a heavenly lass with flaxen locks named Annie (Kelly McGillis). The film is an effort to humanize a political movement that has previously been depicted on screen in a series of unsubtle and prejudicial broad strokes. The film begins in 1915, when Reed (Beatty) makes the acquaintance of married Portland journalist Louise Bryant (Diane Keaton). So persuasive is Reed's point of view--and so charismatic is Reed himself-- that Bryant kicks over the traces and joins Reed and his fellow radicals. Cast as famous Broadway musical comedy star Sally Ross (with an astonishing lack of temperament!), Bacall finds herself the unwilling love object of psychotic fan Douglas Breen (Michael Biehn). As security around Ross tightens, Breen vows that if he can't have Ross, no one else can. James Garner and Maureen Stapleton are underused as, respectively, Bacall's ex-husband and mother-hen secretary. Based on a good novel by Bob Randall, The Fan comes off as a slightly more expensive stalker of the week TV movie. Still, the film proved grimly prescient in the light of John Lennon's assassination (which occurred after the film was completed, but before its release) and the ongoing dilemma of current Broadway stars (even the lesser lights) who are forced to hire bodyguards to protect them from worshipful wackos. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide.

Johnny has nowhere to turn, and because gangsters tend to flourish in his neighborhood he goes to work for Dundee, a benevolent godfather-gangster type, in order to cover his mother's medical bills. Charles (Adam West) and his wife Edna (Candice Azzara) are the new neighbors who reinforce Ryan's vivid imagination. Hugh O'Brien plays a former U.S. vice-president who is embarrassed by Ryan at his daughter's wedding. The scene is Suite 719 of New York City's Plaza Hotel. In the first scene, Matthau's wife (Maureen Stapleton), discovers that he is fooling around with his secretary. In the next episode, Matthau portrays a producer who calls an old flame for a rendezvous - but the lady has more on her mind than romance. In the final sequence, Matthau and Lee Grant are the frustrated parents of a bride-to-be who has locked herself in the bathroom - moments before the wedding! A delightful comedy, Plaza Suite is written in Neil Simon's sensitive and sophisticated style.
